On that note...Newsome outlines 6 goals to meet before restrictions are lifted

https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-04-14/coronavirus-stay-at-home-gavin-newsom-california-order-goals

The administration highlighted six key indicators for altering his stay-home mandate, including the ability to closely monitor and track potential cases, prevent infection of high-risk people, prepare hospitals to handle surges, develop therapeutics to meet demand, ensure schools, businesses and child-care facilities can support social distancing, and develop guidelines for when to ask Californians to stay home again if necessary.

If it was a fuck up in a lab that was trying to prevent it.  I mean that’s obviously bad.  To me that seems less ominous then the wet market bat eating stuff though.  Much more easily preventable from being a problem in the future.  Imo China definitely has a problem with consumption of things that people shouldn’t consume.  There was a study a few years back out of Hong Kong that basically said that this kind of thing was time bomb out of those wet markets.  Not because of the wet markets themselves, but because of some of the shit that people buy and eat out of them.

I'm not sure how this equates into China is  the worlds greatest threat.  Ehh.  They research dangerous things all over the place.  If it is, in fact the result of a laboratory mishap.  I mean holy shit.  But at the same time.  Hopefully there is some lesson learned here.

I don't know, I think any news that comes out of China like this is terrifying.  Mistakes happen, sure.  But this is a country where infant milk producers were poisoning babies for a year and the biggest concern of the Chinese government was to kill any negative publicity around the Olympics.  Any info that leaks out is just the tip of the iceberg.

Governor Sisolak says that he is going to coordinate with other western governors and also consult with medical experts before making a final decision. Our order is tentatively scheduled to expire on April 30.

Whether it came from a wet market or a lab (frankly I don't care where it came from right now) China tried to keep it under wraps and silenced those that tried to warn the world.  When all is said and done the financial impact will be staggering while lives will have been lost and for some people they'll have permanent lung damage.  US politicians and the media are far from perfect but at least here and in many other countries if there's something fishy or screwed up going on someone usually brings it to light.  If there's ever a time to be honest with the rest of the world it's when a virus is starting to break out and China did the exact opposite.  One thing at a time but I hope once the dust settles and we get to our new normal whatever that may be that a lot of US consumers refuse to buy products made in China when possible.

Bluntly put, that ain't happening. Too many of the things that we buy, and the components that go into things that aren't even made in China, come from there.

agreed. Unless Americans are willing to spend 2x, 3x, 4x, etc on goods. Even a good number of made in America products are really just assembled from parts made overseas.

I really don't see how Vegas doesn't collapse. Are they really going to open casinos and strip clubs before there's an effective vaccine?

I don't see that there is a choice. With the percentage of the state budget that the hotel/casino industry comprises, suspension for a year or more simply won't happen.

By all means, let's cut ourselves off from anything that encourages international cooperation.

The current situation has shown why that's an issue and needs to change.  It wouldn't happen overnight but whether it's producing more things here like antibiotics, basic healthcare supplies or having things produced somewhere besides China it needs to happen.  China doesn't play by the same rules - pollution, forced labor, dissidents disappear, control the flow of information, a system that prevents people from getting better wages/working conditions and the list goes on.  Ultimately money talks and I don't count on it happening but long term the more the rest of the world depends on a country that operates like that the more screwed we'll be when something like this happens again.  Our country is far from perfect and it's hands are definitely not clean but I'd like to think if something like COVID-19 started here we wouldn't attempt to sweep it under the rug.  I'm sure some of our elected officials would still bungle it up but I'd at least hope they'd be honest about what's going on.

If the covid didn't get in the way he would be at a pep rally tonight telling everyone everything will be made in the U.S.....Again. MAGA's now all mad at China, lol.  China is fucked up but where else are they going to get their Trump merch from.  You MAGA's really need to research more than Tucker Carlson Tonight.

The remarks by Army General Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, could fan speculation about the coronavirus' origins -- something China has dismissed as a conspiracy theory that is unhelpful to the fight against the pandemic.

Asked whether he had any evidence that the virus began in a Chinese laboratory and was perhaps released accidentally, Milley was non-committal at a Pentagon news briefing.

"There's a lot of rumor and speculation in a wide variety of media, the blog sites, etc. It should be no surprise to you that we've taken a keen interest in that and we've had a lot of intelligence take a hard look at that," Milley said.

"And I would just say, at this point, it's inconclusive although the weight of evidence seems to indicate natural. But we don't know for certain."

“CNN is losing those who want it to be objective AND those who say they aren’t #Resistance enough,” another former CNN staffer, Steve Krakauer tweeted in response to calls for the network to stop airing briefings.

NewsBusters’ Nicholas Fondacaro examined Monday’s edition of “OutFront,” the CNN program that came on once the network decided to ditch the remainder of the briefing. He noted that CNN “dove right into some unhinged hot takes” and the “panel was clearly irate as they threw out a flurry of insults and unsupported accusations all in an effort to blame the over 23,000 coronavirus deaths in the U.S. on the president.”

At one point, Acosta accused Trump of “downplaying the severity of this virus” and the CNN pundits repeatedly echoed their network’s chyron claiming Trump was attempting rewrite history.

“This is CNN: unhinged,” Fondacaro wrote.

While CNN continues to declare that the Trump administration didn’t take coronavirus seriously, the same has been said about the network’s own executives. CNN packed over 250 people into a tiny theater for a presentation to its advertisers on March 5, as other networks had already canceled similar events because of coronavirus concerns.

CNN’s chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta even told attendees that it was completely safe to be in the crowded room and it wasn’t necessary to stock up on masks or pull kids from schools, according to Adweek.

Meanwhile, while labeling White House briefings propaganda, CNN has completely ignored Joe Biden’s sexual misconduct accuser and the network’s fact-checker is almost solely focused on Trump despite previously claiming he would hold both sides accountable for inaccurate statements.

“There's no doubt about it, CNN is trying to fix the presidential election. They don't even pretend to a journalistic enterprise anymore,” Media Research Center vice president Dan Gainor told Fox News.

And here I was thinking that the chairman of JCoS wouldn't just tell the NY Times exactly how he feels and lay out our military strategy.

I don't care for the guilt by association.  I'm about as liberal you can be but I think CNN is a shit stain on America.  I'd agree if it said they were "DNC Media."
