Pine Bush grad Cain to pitch for Los Angeles Angels

"...would any Major League Baseball team take a chance on the 6-foot-10 lefty?

To his surprise, Cain received a call from the Los Angeles Angels as he was pulling into his driveway following a workout Tuesday. After passing medical tests at the Angels’ complex in Phoenix, Cain signed a free-agent contract with Los Angeles on Friday."

8th-rder Kyle Brnovich signs with @Angels for $168,700 (pick 241 value = $171,200). Elon RHP, one of two NCAA D-I with triple-digit K each of last three years, 82-85 mph knuckle-curve is one of nastiest pitches in 2019 @MLBDraft, 88-91 mph fastball as SP, to 94 as RP.

9th-rder Zach Lingenfelter signs with @Angels for $150,800 (pick 271 value = $153,300). Tennessee RHP, can hit 97 mph with fastball & flash a plus slider but inconsistent, profiles more as RP than SP. @MLBDraft

Thank you for all the updates. They are appreciated!

Brnovich and Linginfelter might be profiling more as relievers, but as we're seeing this year, Eppler has been converting almost all of last couple draft's Rd. 5-10 guys, who were also more in the relief mold, from reliever to starter, so I'm taking all of that with a grain of salt at this point.

Seems like there might be a plan in place that looks like...

  • Draft senior college relievers - cheap, advanced, under-the-radar, dynamic arms
  • Give them the year off, condition them for longer outings
  • Convert them to the rotation, build them up to 4-5 innings, 80 pitches
  • Gradually scale them back down to multi-inning relievers as they progress through the system or enter the bigs

In doing so, you may wind up with a couple surprise starters, or a couple legit multi-inning RPs, or a Ty Buttrey-style high-lev relief arm who has the endurance to be used heavily or for 4-6 outs.

Totally agree that this is their plan.

They think a decently strong arm and a plus secondary pitch is a good foundation.  A couple of these types will progress to mid 90's and a third pitch.  Some will just develop that extra velo and some won't hardly progress at all.  But these are all things that can potentially be developed even in college guys.

They are also trying to predict the future a bit.  The 1-5 inning pitcher will be super important and they are going for sheer volume to try and find them.

I think I read Bash has some two-way player potential as well.

4th-rd @MLBDraft pick Erik Rivera signs w/@Angels for $597.5K (pick 121 value = $473.7K). Two-way player from @PRBAHS_ is up to 95 mph on mound, but very raw. Very good raw pop at plate. Angels will let @FIUBaseball recruit hit while he develops on mound.
