It was smart then to invest heavily in pitching the year before.

Just say no to Dumbpoto like high floor picks in the early rounds.

It's only smart if some of that pitching impacts the major league team via promotion or trade. Obviously that hasn't happened yet but I'm optimistic it will at some point. I don't see any of them becoming stars, but Bradish and Hernandez look like they develop into major leagues in some role.

From what I've read, this is the deepest prep and collegiate position player class in close to a decade, and also the worst pitching class in equally as long.

I had heard that about the pitching but didn't realize it was deep on position players.

they're not going to draft with an eye for how quickly a player will impact the major league club.

There was a significant opportunity to do that last year and they took high school projects.

They'll take the best players on their board and their board will likely be heavily weighted toward huge ceiling at the top.

I've seen Brennan Malone going to us in a couple of mock drafts.

I figure with selections like Jahmai Jones, Brandon Marsh, Jo Adell, Jordyn Adams and Jeremiah Jackson all coming in the last three years or so, there's quite the track record for the Angels identifying one thing and one thing alone in this draft.

UPSIDE PREP POSITION PLAYERS FROM THE SOUTH.

So all we really have to do is look at the top prospects for the first round that fit that description and you'll have a pretty good shot at correctly predicting who the Angels select.

Maurice Hampton, Gunnar Henderson, Brett Baty, Riley Greene, C.J. Abrams and Bobby Witt Jr. are going to be the top targets not he draft board.  If we figure that Witt, Abrams and Greene will be off the board before the Angels pick, then that narrows it down to....

Hampton, Henderson and Baty.

Given the athleticism pepper targets, that really narrows it down to Hampton or Henderson.

And now, just by watching the scouting videos I've watched, it is REALLY narrowed down.

The Angels are going to pick Maurice Hampton and buy him out of his football commit to LSU.

Who are we targeting in the 32nd round?  That's my favorite

Scott Shields - 38th round

Orlando Palmeiro - 33rd round

Jett Bandy - 31st round

We've actually got a couple guys in the pipeline right now from the 30th round and on that will likely see time at the major league level which is actually impressive

Jeremy Beasley - 30th round pick 2017.  now in AA and doing well.  could be a back end starter or swing guy
Connor Higgins - 30th round pick in 2018.  could be a lefty specialist.
Connor Lillis-White 32nd round in 2015- reliever with 98k in 72ip at AA/AAA last year.
Jose Rojas - 36th round in 2016 - the hit man
Jared Walsh - 39th round in 2015 - two way Walsh

@Inside Pitch any thoughts?  I remember last year the night before the draft, might even been the week before you let us know who the Angels were drafting.  Hell you might have even done that two years in a row.

I have not spoken to my snitch to get any details...

Not gonna lie, it would not shock me if the Angels possibly went after BPA at 3B early...   Josh Jung is first half to mid first talent that has enough tools to possibly catch the Angels' eye.    They have never been one to target needs but this is one of those times where the position and the player may line up well for them.

The two mock drafts I saw had us taking Corbin Carroll or Kameron Misner.

pass on Carroll.

Misner could be a solid choice.  Seems like a college version of Marsh.

Jung and Kody Hoese could be a couple of college guys to go after.  Or maybe someone like Baty.  He and Hoese seem destined for late 1 or early 2.  Maybe we could snag one of them in the 2nd.

BTW, the first round is a month from yesterday.

Two dudes with last names as first names. Not sure how I feel about that.

Percy never addressed this specifically but I think deep down inside we all knew what he would’ve thought about it.

From BA's mock draft.

Can I just say this...  I hope to God we don't draft another toolsy outfielder. I would like to go for a either a 3B out of college with good power/OBP/Defense, an offensive first catcher with solid if not spectacular defense, or a college starting pitcher with a good track record against solid college opponents and good upside.

We scored on Jo Adell, but Marsh, Jackson and Adams may turn out to be toolsy OF busts and Knowles may not ever perform outside of low-A ball (TBD).
