thanks.  never realized that rule before.  So I guess it just forces the A's to use up a 40 man spot earlier than expected.  Potentially accelerates his path to free agency.  In all likelihood though he'd be on the 40 within 3 years or so anyway.

I want to say this happened to Howie Kendrick.

The White Sox have offered an eight-year contract to free agent infielder Manny Machado, ESPN.com’s Jeff Passan reports.  We heard last week that Chicago had formally put an offer on the table for Machado, though it isn’t known if this eight-year pact is that same deal, or if the Sox have upped their offer.

There seem to be at least three suitors in play for Machado at this time, as Passan notes that the White Sox and Phillies (who are “still engaged” with Machado) have been told that a mystery team is also interested.  The Yankees have been linked to Machado this winter, though they might not be the third suitor, as recent reports seem to indicate a waning interest in Machado’s services.

Abreu, Kopech, Anderson.  I think they signed Herrera.  That’s all I got.

I still can't even recall who Anderson is...

Moncada, Abreu, Yolmer Sanchez, Rodon, Giolito...uhhh. They have a great farm, but I also feel like they could be one of those teams that totally and absolutely blows a rebuild.

Everyone else I could remember is now a FA or was traded. Avisail Garcia, Soria, Davidson, Narvaez, James Shields

As much as I'd like to see the best athletes in baseball, if he's first round pick material then I'd go the football route if I'm him.  Much more guaranteed money up front (assuming the A's don't give him a ridiculous money), and  even if he sucks he can hold a clipboard and still get paid.  Even Blaine Gabbert has been in the league for 8 years.

If he sucks in baseball, he'll make 500k for a couple years then be out of the league, if that.

Tim Anderson, the ChiSox shortstop, has solid power like other new age shortstops.   Still struggles to find consistency in the field and at the plate.

I got Abreu. no idea who Kopech and Anderson are.

I guess it would be 3 if I count "Machado's 2 buddies", although I can't remember their names.

Kopech or however you spell it will be a stud pitcher.  He was part of the Sale trade.
