Oakland A's 2018 1st round pick Kyler Murray dumping them for dreams of the NFL and entering the NFL draft.

Dunno what he's thinking, to be honest, but y'know - people should do what they want to do.

He's gonna have to return about $4.5mil in signing bonus money to Oakland, but don't worry, they'll be sure to invest that money in some other player instead of simply dropping it in their rich owner's pocket.

He’ll be taken in the first round, sign a contract with more guaranteed money than 4.5 million.

He’s doing the right thing financially. It’s no guarantee he ever makes it to the majors if he goes the baseball route.

So if things don’t work out in the NFL, he can then pursue a baseball career if he still wants.

So much for all that talk from his dickhead agent Scott Boras about being committed to playing baseball and being an Oakland A. The A's wasted a draft pick because of this. I'm not an A's fan but I hate people getting screwed by others lies or indecisiveness.

Whatever. I never felt Kyler Murray was 1st round material anyway. I thought it was a stupid unnecessary risk Oakland took.

I bet that Boras still gets paid.

Pretty sure when he was drafted they had already said he could play QB for one year.  He evolved into a first round pick.  Now the A’s will get the equivalent pick this year, right?

Don't think so, he signed a contract and is still property of the team.

is there a link detailing new developments in this story?

last i heard, declaring for the draft doesn't void anything with the A's. if he gets drafted in the first round, then he has a financial incentive to make a new decision as the 32nd picked player will get a contract around 10 million dollars with about a 5 million dollar signing bonus. i don't know what the contract estimates are for the 2nd round.

if he doesn't get drafted in the first round, then he can say, "no, thank you" to the nfl and move along. that risk alone may worry enough teams to drop him out of the first round. although, i'd be fairly certain any team would have had intense discussions on his willingness to sign before drafting him.

At least from what I've seen, he's an athletic QB whose success in the NFL will ultimately be dictated by his ability to read a defense and the quality of his offensive line. We'll see.

From the videos I've seen of him playing baseball, he's clearly the best athlete on the field, but his game is raw and unrefined. If he was in high school, then yeah I'd take him in the first round because he's 18, you have time to mold him into a ball player and with that talent, he could be great. But from a collegiate player...you're not getting someone that raw into the majors by 23/24 like you want from prospects. More like 25/26.

that's pretty much the case for every QB entering the NFL.

and he's not 5'8"

if he were 5'8", he'd be taller than griffin canning who is of similar stature and build to that of a small Asian woman.

My ex-wife was listed at 5'1 but probably topped out at 4'11. Didn't have great "stuff" but her mound presence was HoF worthy
