Tampa Bay loses to the Yankees, which clinches a Wild Card spot for Oakland.

Oakland is the first team in 30 years to start the season with the lowest payroll in baseball and make the playoffs.

Actually, the team with the second lowest payroll was.................Tampa Bay. They made it to the last week of the season before being eliminated.

Oakland is now 28th in payroll. The Rays are now dead last, per Spotrac.

Trout is worth it, but some of the others...geez.

Albert's salary this year was about a third of OAK's entire starting payroll.

Quick pitch just showed Manny Machado admiring his hit at the plate and start his jog to first then realize it bounched off the wall and had to sprint for a double when it was a stand-up triple had he been running from the start.

It was runners on first and second, and Utley (guy on first) was held up at third base anyway so in the end there was no effect. 

 

Joe Davis and Orel hershiser did a nice job calling him out on the broadcast though.

Their biggest impact players this year (outside of Davis), Piscotty, Olson, Chapman, Canha, Laureano, Pinder, Martini are all earning under 600K. Except Piscotty, who is earning 1 mil, even.

That core will probably be there for 1-3 years (who can say, really, with the A's), but their pitching will be a complete reworking next year. Virtually all their starters are either on the DL or unsigned for next year. That includes Familia and Rodney from the 'pen..

The way this game is played right now...every team needs 2 or 3 closers. Tampa Bay was just eliminated yesterday..YESTERDAY! They started using the pen to start games, and have a bunch of kids at the positions.

Want to improve by 10 or 15 games right now? Build a super solid bullpen! Think about it...95% of MLB games are won or lost by the bullpens in these days of nearly zero complete games. I know it isn't easy with the inconsistency year to year of bullpen arms, but the way to instant improvement in the win/lost columns is to compile a lights out relief corps..and then rethink how those guys are best used.

It's a brave new world that is going to play out more and more in the next few seasons..
