Dow futures now down about 850 points. I'm wondering if circuit breakers might get triggered today.

Good news for the average Joe is WTI crude is around $38 a barrel.

Dow is up almost 500 points from the low in the past half-hour!

 

This is going to be an historic day.

After being down 1,000 points at opening it's currently down 300.  Going to be a long day for traders.  

 

Edit - minutes later it's now down almost 500 points.  If it gets down 7% they've said they'll temporarily halt trading.

You can forget about any rate hike in 2015. With the markets this volatile, the Fed wouldn't dare. But they need to make a definitive announcement. The uncertainty is a big problem for investors and companies.

You can forget about any rate hike in 2015. With the markets this volatile, the Fed wouldn't dare. But they need to make a definitive announcement. The uncertainty is a big problem for investors and companies.

 

A rate hike was previously been factored in by investors because as of about a week or so ago everyone was expecting it.  I don't disagree that it's not likely if the markets keep reacting like this but at some point they need to start unwinding.    

 

As much fun as this is currently it's nothing like 2008 as it's largely fueled by fear but then again at a point the increase was fueled by optimism more than fundamentals.  I think a lot of people have expected a correction for a while now as it's been overdue.  An article I read this morning outlined possible declines ranging from 9% to 37% from the all time highs.  Given how the markets and investors react who knows as the markets could end up from where they are now by month end.

When you see a super-sharp selloff like we saw this morning, the chances of a bounce are greater.

 

I'm not necessarily a buyer today but I think maybe sometime this week I might start to nibble.

Don't discount the effect of high speed, high volume computer trading. Huge blocks of stocks are bought and sold in microseconds and orders kick in on the smallest of signals. Retail investors are like horse-and-buggy riders next to supersonic cars.

It will be interesting to see what happens during the last 30 minutes of trading today.  Will the market rally into the close or sell off?

401k's have steadily gained over the last six years, something like 61% if i heard it correctly from the analyst on abc news this morning. we know that every so often the market does some kind of correction. let's hope it isn't too severe today.

 

i'm glad i'm not about to retire in the next few months, i'll tell you what.

The last several years of quantitative easing has created huge asset bubbles.  With the slowing down of the global economy, a major correction is overdue.  The IMF and BIS have been sending quiet warnings for the last year now.

With three minutes left, there's a battle to hold the line at 16,000.

The market tried to rally into the close but couldn't sustain it.

Everyone will be watching China tonight to see if the carnage continues there. It will be interesting to see if their government makes another move to prop up their market.
