Orange County Register: Angels are aiming to turn data into W's

Recommended Posts

In the past, the Angels’ front office generated advance scouting material that would be delivered to the clubhouse, left up to the coaching staff to interpret and relay to the players.

“Now we have two people (in the clubhouse) whose job is to make sure this information is accurate and digested and that everyone is connected to it,” Dipoto said.

Ouch. Shows what little faith Dipoto has in Scioscia.

If only all that data could turn their crappy pitchers into good ones

"Other players, such as Howie Kendrick, say they don’t want to be burdened with too much data, and that’s OK with Dipoto and Scioscia"

Guess that means we can look forward to Howie still flailing away at off speed pitches in the dirt with RISP

Yup, in the end, it all comes down to player personnel and makeup. It's safe to say that there is still alot more work to be done in that area, and that's all on Dipoto.

Burdened?  How exactly?

According to the Times article on the same subject, some players want to have the ability to react instinctually to plays in the field if they see that a situation warrants it.  That's kind of like trusting your dog to react to the mailman as an intruder, or a close friend.

Lol, you beat me to it. All the data in the world doesn't make poor pitchers throw quality strikes or improve poor plate approaches. While all this is good, all the data gathering in the world is not going to help if players don't execute.

Why the hell has it taken so long to assign these types of jobs to people?

We're paying players millions of dollars, but the organization has waited to  pay a couple guys $100,000/yr (maybe) to look at every piece of data and video we collect, and to have them cut out the most valuable pieces that could be important to the staff, coaches and players of the club? This sounds like a no brainier that the club should already have.

And the team should use this data throughout the season to their advantage to fix problems that arise, to scout competition, or fix problematic habits that seem to be hurting the team or players performance. Sure too much data can be overwhelming, but the players and coaches shouldn't dealing with ALL the information, just the guys who are paid to make sure it's all looked over.
