The first episode of every season is always kind of bland. They have to reestablish the storylines for everyone.

You can probably expect shorter episodes. I know the next two seasons after this one have only 8 and 6 episodes in each. Apparently the time it takes to make these plus the budget is getting out of hand for it being a TV show.

I see no reason for the episodes to be shorter other than to fit in all the promos for other shows that otherwise nobody would watch.
