Reports coming out that a Chinese ship has detected "pings" underwater in the South Indian Ocean. No confirmation if it's the pings from the black box of the Malaysian Aircraft.

We are past the one month mark and no new pings reported since Tuesday. The chances of finding the black box is now dwindling quicker than the batteries.

 

Anyone want to become a multi millionaire? Design the next black box that can give out GPS coordinates from 3 miles under the ocean surface for 90 days. The first three weeks of this investigation was wasted in running the wrong direction then weather had an effect on the search mission. So a good 90 days should be enough time for even Malaysia to pull their thumbs out of their ass and find their missing aircraft.

Simple.  Just put epirb's on planes.  One on both wing tips, one on the tail.  One in each emergency doors.

To me it seems better to have it active before it splashes. Maybe activated by descending below a certain altitude with the gear up or auto pilot disengagement without pilot consent. You could create a list of parameters that would activate it before the crash.

Nope. They aren't activated by water. They are activated by the pressure change during submersion. This is why boats can leave them on deck.

I don't know how the pressure changes if altitude and flight would affect them. Probably negatively, which is why they aren't in use.

The black box activated just fine. No need to improve on that technology. They just need a longer lasting battery and more defined signal.

No. Bigger pieces wiegh more snd sink.

Flight control surfaces like that are usually made of boron composite and have honeycomb interiors so likely more buoyant that other parts might be.

You have to complete the trip in order to get frequent flier miles for it. If the plane crashes, all frequent flier miles are null and void. So there.
