I'm glad Jeff Boras isn't his agent, because he'd create a 100-page dissertation on why Ohtani should get a "double contract" because he's essentially two players.

Or Scott Boras for that matter

With an incredible June after a meh April and May for Ohtani standards, he's put himself in contention for another MVP race as we head toward summer.

His competition this season isn't just Vladimir Guerrero Jr. as it was in 2021, but he's got Devers, Judge, Ramirez and his own teammate Mike Trout to contend with. The above is his fWAR from Fangraphs, here's his bWAR:

What Ohtani is doing on the mound and at the plate of late, if he keeps this up he's an unanimous AL MVP again despite the larger field of candidates having good seasons.

Arte will absolutely sign Shohei to a long extension.   Remember that Arte's #1 objective is to sell beers.

Butts in seats = Beer sales.

Not to mention that Ohtani also is 1 roster spot playing two positions.  This frees up a spot for an extra player.

The Angels would need to get the other 7 starting AL all star team members to make the deal even Steven.

Very few teams can match Trout and Ohtani (DH), Ohtani (P) as the #1, #2, #3 guys.  The Angels just need to figure out the other 7 positions.   Someone is due to step up, a minor leaguer is due to emerge, a couple of those (20) drafted pitchers have to pay off.   Just don't panic.  We only need a light year on the injury front, and some luck to turn it around.

Also keep Nevin as manager.  He has an "edge" to him that the players will respond to.

This post just cheered me the hell up. "Just don't panic" I dig the positive vibes.

Rooting for Nevin as manager sealed the deal. He's a wildcard, probably unqualified but shit let's try it, he's the kinda guy this team needs.

And you're absolutely correct, Arte will pay to keep Ohtani. Who are we kidding?

Angels just need to figure out the other 7 positions. It can't be that hard.

Not like it's never happened before.

I think it has?

Shohei should be an Angel for life.  He brings revenue to the team at a greater rate for the Angels than Cole does for the Yankees or even Trout does for the halos.  He's the most marketable and valuable player in all of MLB.  If you made a mistake on Rendon, you don't sacrifice keeping Ohtani because of that.

Every big contract is pretty much a bad decision.  Teams know this.  Fans know this.  It's not rocket science.  You tend to overpay for a certain amount of value.  But if you approach it as if someone who is getting paid 40m a year is going to translate that into 40m worth of actual baseball on the field value then you are stupid.

You want to be a team that has 3 big dong contracts?  Fine.  But you still have to build the right team around that and if you can't, then don't go after those guys.

There is the business of baseball and then there is actual baseball.  The two things need to be separated.  Should a 190m payroll be enough to win games?  Of course.  But if you expect 120m of that production to come from three guys on a daily then you are doing it wrong.

So fine.  Great.  Let's play with the big dogs.  But the big dogs don't stop after their top three guys.  They pay very close attention to the other 23 guys on the roster.  They pay close attention to the wins provided from each player regardless of their salary.

If I spend this much, I am entitled to get this.  Nope.

And then he showed these men of will what will really was.
