OC Register: Angels’ Mike Trout still ‘feeling something’ in his calf, set to see doctor on Monday

Recommended Posts

MINNEAPOLIS >> Mike Trout’s rehab from a strained calf is on hold pending a previously scheduled Monday examination with one of the Angels’ doctors.

Manager Joe Maddon said Trout is not yet 100 percent, which explains why he has not yet begun his rehab assignment.

“He just feels it a little bit in that area, when he really tries to move quickly,” Maddon said on Sunday morning. “It doesn’t hurt. It’s just anybody that’s ever pulled a muscle in the leg, that’s when you get to that final point of healing.

“There’s that there’s also a mental adhesion that you have to break in the back of your mind to try to push through that point, because you don’t want to hurt it again, we don’t want him to hurt it again. So you really want to make sure that it’s totally healed before you push it to that level.

“He definitely feels something but not all the time. And that could just be normal routine stuff. And that’s we’re waiting to hear from the doc.”

Trout has been with the Angels on this trip to Oakland and Minnesota, the first time he traveled with the team since he suffered the injury on May 17.

After a workout on Monday, Trout said that he felt “close, really close” to going on a rehab assignment. He said he was “excited” about his progress.

Trout He ran the bases on Tuesday in Oakland. On Thursday in Minneapolis he ran the bases again and took batting practice in one of the regular pregame groups.

In the three days since, though, Trout has barely appeared on the field during the pregame workouts.

“I don’t know exactly why he hasn’t run,” Maddon said. “I haven’t been told that, because he’s on a specific program with the trainers, but just relating to you that there’s something that he feels, but it’s not awful. And we’re just waiting to hear from the doc.”

CLAUDIO OUT

The Angels designated Alex Claudio for assignment to create a spot for Jaime Barria, who was recalled from Triple-A on Sunday to start.

Claudio, 29, signed a $1.13 million deal with the Angels over the winter, but he posted a 5.51 ERA. He was one of the best pitchers in baseball at inducing weak contact in 2020, but this year he was only slightly better than average.

His walk rate also nearly doubled, from his career average of 2.3 walks per nine innings to 4.1 walks per nine innings.

CAUTION WITH STARTERS

The Angels could have had José Suarez pitch on Sunday on a normal four days rest, but Maddon said this year they have been leery of using any of their starters on four days rest.

Although that’s normally been the standard amount of rest, Maddon said the Angels are being extra cautious this year because all pitchers are making a significant workload jump from the shortened 2020 season to a full season in 2021.

Shohei Ohtani had his start pushed back to Monday to give him six days rest.

And Ripken had 2,170 more hits, 1,205 more RBI, and 1,184 more Runs than good ol' Shea.

Your point?

Simple. My point is that Shea Hillenbrand had a career OPS of 760.

And a higher career BA than Ripken

Has something happened to your brain recently?  Your posts are becoming increasingly bizarre.  Hillenbrand's career OPS+ is 95.  He was a below average hitter.  Ripken's was 112, as I've already stated.  Hillenbrand was also not a good defensive player.

I merely posted facts.

John Paciorek has the highest career OPS and batting average of any major league player.  Therefore, he must be better than Babe Ruth, Barry Bonds, and Mike Trout combined.

Must he?

But the HR derby did a number on you. You’ve been posting differently ever since that whole discussion about Ohtani supposedly not getting support from Trout and Walsh.

You should start drinking again.

He did get support from Walsh and Trout.

Maybe you guys should stop drinking.
