What does Ohtani have to do to be considered a viable MVP candidate?

Recommended Posts

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I don't think either his pitching or offensive numbers, looked at by themselves, will warrant MVP consideration but if both are very good at season's end there may be a real chance. If he can put up very good numbers as a two way player then that will be hard to ignore since no other player else can even be in that conversation.

The team has to win games for either he or Trout to get that consideration going forward.
Either that or has has to pull a Baylor and it must be so obvious that no one else could be considered and put up video game numbers while no one esle gets close.

I agree. The Angels were incredibly successful as a team when Trout won his MVPs in 2016 and 2019.

Would winning the MVP make Ohtani seem more exciting?

Right now, Trout is like the leading AL MVP candidate. Yup, once again, he's on the list with a .342/.463/.649 slash line. He's due to heat up at the plate again at some point so I could see an OPS around 1.200 in a couple of weeks. Another great candidate is Cole. He's the only starting pitcher on the Yankees that everyone trusts. Kluber has been inconsistent this season but he's coming along lately. Severino has been an All-Star a couple of times but still hasn't made his 2021 debut yet. Taillon, Montgomery, and German haven't put up solid numbers this season. Take Cole out and the Yankees might not be a .500 team right now. Having that star starting pitcher like Cole has its effect on the starting rotation and bullpen. More rest for the bullpen should mean a more effective bullpen. Right now, it's Trout or Cole as the MVP front runner in the American League with guys like John Means and Bogaerts in the hunt.

I don't think he needs to hit xx number of HRs or pitch x number of innings necessarily...if he stays healthy and on a pace similar to what he's done so far, he might just run away with it unless someone posts a historic season.
There will be too much temptation to give it to a two-way player for the first time simply for that fact.

Unfortunately, the way his health has been to date, any successful full season both on the mound and at the plate where he's playing well above-average could always wind up being that one magical year too. It'll be too good to pass up.

On a last place team?

Jesus are we going to cover this subject again?  The MVP is the player in the league that every GM would pick first to be in their team if they could go back to April with hindsight knowing how each player performed.

The intangibles do come into it, and if you are clearly influential in creating a winning environment, then being on a winning team can help you get votes.

You cannot eliminate players from being considered the most valuable player in the league if the pitching staff on that team sucks.

Its a stupid angle.
