How great would it be if Thaiss could be an adequate defensive catcher. We could have a situation where in a couple years, the Angels have two re-converted guys in Thaiss and Ward platooning at C.

It would be awesome. Still hoping his bat can come around. Obviously, there'd be less pressure on the bat if he was a catcher.

Thaiss wasn't a bad catcher in college, it was just one of those scenarios where you knew he wasn't projecting to be necessarily good at the next level. He was drafted for his bat anyway. Kind of like the undersized SS that you know will play 2B at the next level.

For Thaiss, his defensive home has definitely been a journey. Played 1B and was pretty decent there defensively until Walsh passed him on the depth chart. Slid over to 3B, and showed some promise there too until the team signed Rendon. Played around with corner outfield and 2B over the past year, but really what was the point? Fletcher and Rengifo have 2B locked down and there isn't much of a future in the corner outfield with Ward, Walsh, Adell and Marsh all capable out there.

I'm guessing Thaiss plays catcher like Taylor Ward played catcher. Though he never was good as Ward was as a catcher, it's more just one of those things that makes them more attractive as a utility option to any roster.

He shouldn't be pimping anything when he's hitting .235 in AAA (his BA right now). I know, its early but...you have to earn the right to pimp.

That said, I'm glad the Angels are playing him in LF - I think that's his long-term position, given his good speed and relatively weak arm. Of course Trout will probably need to slot in there at some point, but I don't see him wanting to give up CF unless it is more than obvious that someone else (Adams, maybe Deveaux) is substantially better out there.

Speaking of which, where are Deveaux and Knowles? Neither has played a game yet. According to MiLB.com, Knowles is on the Inland Empire roster, so presumably injured. But they have Deveaux listed as AZL (low Rookie), which seems odd. I wonder if he didn't impress in camp, as I would have thought he'd be in low A with Knowles.

Speaking of Knowles, I just saw that he has a twin brother, D'Vaughn. @Lou?

Knowles is headed for A Ball, he's a late add. As for Deveaux, I think enough time has elapsed to where we know what he is and isn't. He's fast and can patrol CF pretty well. Can't hit though. Doesn't matter what stance they use, he just isn't a hitter.

it's early and such, but Adell's swing from last year looks more clean and faster. But my concern with him is the High strike-out rate. But it's only been 3 games so not too worry about it. Like many other's I'm 50/50 on him and i think if we can get enough Value from him, along with Marsh and Adam showing the abaility to be solid MLb players, than i would not mind pulling the Plug.

It's context too. If Adell were never promoted last year, we would see this and probably love the moxie. But to the casual fan, Jo Adell is that one kid that wore the BLM shirt and had a ball bounce off his head for a HR. Of course there's more to him than that but that's just the first glance without any digging.

It's different when Tatis does it despite the fact that he and Adell are the same age, and it's because Tatis is probably one of the five best players in baseball. Being a superstar and doing it in the big leagues versus unestablished AAA prospect.

It would be like Reid Detmers doing the McGregor strut after a strike out versus Trevor Bauer doing it.

But seriously though, stop pimping your shit in the minors. No one in the front office or in the majors is impressed by your ability to yank a baseball over the wall in LF while playing at high altitude. Having fun doesn't require being a jackass.

Why use the word "pimp"?

That's what we always called it growing up. That's also what other board members have called it. Do you have a different term you use?

Deveaux showed improvement in 2019. But given that his adjustments in AZL didn't translate a half level to Orem, I can see them wanting to start him in Orem again. But let's not give up on a 21 year old yet. He's only played 104 pro ball games. I have more hope for him than, say, Maitan. Deveaux could turn out to be a low rent version of Devon White and have himself a career as a toolsy 4OF with great defense - the type of guy teams like to have around.

Kyren Paris with a 4-hit game in 6 at-bats as well as this walkoff extra base-hit. This gives him a slash line of .300/.417/.917 after striking out in his first 5 at-bats to start the season.

With the way that they talked up Paris I was almost sure they would ticket him to High-A to start this season. Hopefully he continues this hot start and works his way there soon. (Also it's so weird referring to the 66ers as a low-a team)

After the first game of the season in which he and fellow prospect infielder Jeremiah Jackson went 0-4 with 4 K's each, Paris is slashing .300/.417/.500 with a .917 OPS.

Paris 6 stolen bases are tied for second in the minors behind the first place leader Oswald Peraza who has 7.

Paris also struck out in his first at-bat of the second game of the season. Kyren breaking out this season will go a long way for our future at the shortstop position. Him, Kochanowicz and Calabrese are the guys I'm hoping shoot up prospect boards this season.
