For those who are doing OK, what is one thing you think has helped?

Leading up to this, I had been doing incredibly well with diet and exercise. I got my weight to a point it hasn’t been at in 7 or 8 years. But I have been kind of lazy the last two weeks, haven’t exercised nearly as much, and haven’t been strict with my diet.

I gotta get back into the pre COVID routine, which I think is going to require the same type of daily structure that I had when going to the gym and then office each day.  I think getting dressed each day is absolutely critical. I eat healthier wearing clothes than sitting around in a bathrobe. And I am trying to get some exercise bands for my home gym, but like Cat said I think it will take a month to get them.

My routine hasn't changed very much at all. I am still going to work, and I can't escape anything about COVID-19. I am surrounded by people who are fearful (not my staff so much as others), we have two units on quarantine until April 10 because of contact with a staff member who tested positive, and it seems like almost everything I am asked anymore deals with personal protective equipment, and people insisting that they need it even when they are not in high risk positions. One employee asked me if he needs to wear a mask at his desk and wear gloves to handle the paperwork that crosses it.

Most of the things that I enjoy as diversions are off the table: An occasional trip to a casino (if you go often or play a lot of money, you soon won't be able to afford to live here), an occasional trip to a movie theater, eating out, going to museums and national recreation areas. I watch news only very sparingly, because I get enough of that crap at work.

Although I am getting paid now, it is a virtual certainty that at some point during the fiscal year, we will be put on unpaid furlough, doing the same job in less time with less staff for less money. Although I make a good salary, much of it is accounted for, and my expenses aren't going on furlough with me. I had planned to retire within three years, and that may be in jeopardy now.

We are also facing staffing shortages, and we are understaffed even when all of our positions are full, given the size of the facility. I currently have six vacant nursing positions, a resignation that will be effective 4/6 (this employee has decided that he will call off from now until then, so that he can get paid for stranding us), and one who is about to be fired because she can't stop verbally abusing coworkers (interviewing isn't an exact science). It is uncertain how we are going to conduct interviews during this time. I absolutely hate telephone interviews, because visual cues are absent, and we have been severely burned in the past when we have hired people who were interviewed this way. You also don't know if the interviewee has written out scripted phrases and is merely reading them off.

Aside from our call volume doubling over the last several weeks, nothing much has changed for me.  That is going to change dramatically in the next couple weeks.  We currently have 13 positive Covid-19 tests and those employees are on quarantine.  We now have 71 symptomatic employees who are voluntarily quarantining awaiting test results.  I'm fairly certain that, much like post 9/11, the world of pre-hospital care is going to change forever because of this.

I find myself not thinking about me, personally, I find myself thinking about all of you.  Those of you who are layed off, furloughed, or working from home.  I'm concerned for your well being, and I hope and pray that you all pull through this stronger than before.

What has helped me?  Spending time with my wife and family when I can, but this weekend, my wife and I went to our house in Big Bear just to get away.  While the town was a ghost town, we were able to do 2 amazing hikes on the North Shore of the lake, around the Pacific Crest Trail, and take our bikes out and just ride along the lakes edge.  On Saturday, we packed a lunch, a bunch of beers, our speaker box for music, and some chairs and just went to the shoreline and watched people fish and observed nature.  It was really nice.

Whatever you can do to take your mind off this, keep doing it.  Take a break from the news and the news conferences, and relax if you can.

And like Red321. my hands feel like 60 grit sandpaper also.  I've found the GoldBond hand lotion works pretty good, but I'm going to try the Trader Joes one on the recommendation from the poster on page 1.

oh, but one of my bigger fucking nitpicks about this whole thing...hands are a dried out mess from all this hand washing

Might be an option.

Look into making your own. I have a friend that kind of went full blown doomsday when this first started and she started making her own (I can get you the recipe if you want). I tried it a few times and it actually makes my hands softer. I asked and while she puts your normal sanitizer ingredients in, she also adds aloe and its a game changer.

Aside from drinking and being on YouTube all the time, I have two older friends That have been coming over and we go out to a picnic like area alone and all kind of chip in like someone would with a potluck or just all hangout in my place. One of the cool things is the middle aged broad and I love to cook and we have been doing that quite a bit.

Physically: Eating healthy foods, getting enough sleep, not drinking much, taking immune support supplements, sitting in the sun to get some Vitamin D.

Psychologically: Spending time with my daughters and girlfriend (we all just started playing Dungeons & Dragons) and two cats, working on my almost-finished novel, not reading too much news, feeling gratitude for what I have, being consciously in the moment as much as possible.

What I need more of: Exercise.

Looks like the Coronavirus is real.

Though you jest, I'll give a serious answer. Alcohol is really bad for the immune system. Pretty simple. Dungeons & Dragons (properly written with the ampersand) is a lot of fun. Playing make-believe, telling and participating in stories, killing monsters and taking their shit...what's not to like?

With all the hand washing these days....I was having trouble keeping paper towels in the house.    So I ordered a huge case of commercial-style multi-fold paper towels and two cheap dispensers for them  ($12 each, I think).    It's worked pretty well so far.    They don't work very well to wipe up or clean stuff.   But they work ok for drying hands once you get used to them, which saves the other kind for clean up stuff.

Just buy a washable hand towel.

you should have gone with one of these super sanitary beauties that all of us like to use in a public men's room:

Continuous cloth Hand Towel Dispenser...anyone else remember these ...

Yeah, I've got a teen and a 20 y.o. at home that I frankly don't trust to always do a great job washing their hands before drying or changing out the hand towel when needed.    I feel a lot better using paper.    But, if it were just me at home or if paper became unavailable....then obviously I'd go that route.
