In Defense of Eppler

injuries should never be used as an excuse. every team in the league deals with serious injuries throughout the years. The angels haven't suffered any more than most.

So you don't think 4/5 of the rotation suffering season ending injuries is a valid reason to help explain poor team pitching performance?

every Facking year we blame injuries to crappy players as the reason we suck. it gets old

I'd argue the Cahill and Harvey decisions were the back breakers on top of the Skaggs tragedy...   They simply needed those two guys to improve on the slop they threw out there at four and five last year and they failed miserably....

It's still on Eppler for not trading Cam and Kole in 2016 among other players. It's still on him for not convincing his boss to "tank" and play for a draft pick and the future in 2016 and pretty much all the seasons he's been a GM considering what this article already addressed. He should have realized his team was not going to make the playoffs and sold accordingly to make the next year and years after better.

Then again, maybe he did go to Arte and say listen we have to do a semi rebuild and trade guys like Cam and Kole while their value is high and Arte said no. Ultimately, Arte owns the team and he is the one in charge of hiring his staff and he has proven he doesn't know how to do that very well.

The Yankees comps would make a lot more sense if they were fielding a team similar to the Angels..  They werent.

The Yankees weren't trying to dig themselves out of a hole created by a near decade of mismanagement.  The Yankees went into the season  with a significantly better/deeper team than the Angels.   It's a testament to the job Cashman had already done.

Three years from now I'm hoping the Angels are as well positioned as the 2019 Yankees were.

I agree that they were in a better position but Cashman made some very clever moves in the same timeframe. That kid Urshela is probably a top three defensive third baseman in baseball and he can hit. He was an easy acquisition. They lost Severino for most or all this season. They signed Happ and Paxton. They haven’t been anything special but they do keep the team in games. Luke Voit was a great find. DJ Lemahieu was a genius move that Cozart probably prevented us from entertaining. But yes the Yankees were not as disadvantaged as the Angels. To your point 3 years is about right.

The most common defense of Eppler is that he’s rebuilding, even though he’s not.

It’s not a “piss away 3-5 seasons and restock the farm rebuild”, it’s a “let’s stay competitive and if everything goes right we will be in the playoffs as we restock the farm rebuild”

you havent been paying much attention have you ??

Very good analysis, AJ.

Too bad the usual dickwads had to show up.

Yep.  Sorry AJ that assholes had to ruin a very good post and thread.  You put more thought into that one post than any of these guys have the entire time they have posted.  I appreciate your efforts.
