Wednesday, August 23, 2017:
Mobile (60-67)
won 2-0 vs. Biloxi (64-61)
Brennon Lund: 0-4, RBI
Zach Houchins: 1-4, R
Jose Rojas: 0-4, 2 K
Zach Gibbons: 2-4, K - slashing .306/.342/.403/.745 in August (18 G, 72 AB)
And someone who may be closer than we think...
Grayson Long: 7 IP, 3 H, BB, 7 K - his last 10 starts, 50.2 IP, 1.95 ERA, 18 BB, 49 K
On the season at AA (22 GS, 116.2 IP) - 2.62 ERA, .228 BAA, 1.14 WHIP, 36 BB, 106 K, only 7 HRA

Taylor Ward hasn't played in any of the last 3 games, and Matt Thaiss hasn't played the last two. Haven't had a chance to dig around, anyone know why?

Inland Empire (59-70) lost 1-5 to Lancaster (73-56)
Jahmai Jones: Did not play
Jack Kruger: 1-3, R, HR (1), RBI, BB, K
Brandon Diaz: 2-2, 3B, BB, SB (5), CS (1) - recently plucked from Milwaukee system
Nate Bertness: 6 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 K

Not Angels related, but Good Lord, Lancaster's Wes Rogers nabbed stolen base number 64 last night. Even with the growth we've seen the Angels system have this season, it's still sobering to see the opposition's box scores sometimes show numbers like 64 SB or 24 HR when we've been hard pressed to break 20 SB for a player or 12 HR. I realize some of those gaudy numbers don't even translate to top prospects, but there's still a ways to go.

Burlington (56-72) lost 0-1 vs. Clinton (58-68)
Jonah Todd: 0-3, BB
Brandon Sandoval: 0-4, K
Richard Fecteau: 3-4
Elvin Rodriguez (Burlington debut!): 5 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K - 67 pitches, 50 strikes
Zac Ryan: 3 IP, 2 H, BB, 4 K - at Burlington: 23.2 IP, 0.76 ERA, .200 BAA, 1.14 WHIP, 9 BB, 25 K

Orem (39-19) lost 10-11 in 11 innings vs. Grand Junction (31-28)
Torii Hunter: 3-7, R, 2B, 2 RBI, 4 K, E (1)
Julio Garcia (Orem debut!): 3-6, R, 2B, 2 RBI, K
Kevin Williams: 2-6, R, HR (2), RBI, 4 K - first 7 pro games, .250/.344/.464/.808 with 2 HR
Jeyson Sanchez: 3-6, 3 R, 2B, K - still putting up crazy numbers at  Orem - in 15 G: 7 2B, 8 HR, 23 RBI, 6 BB, 15 K - .426/.500/1.000/1.500
Angel Molina: 3-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB - in 19 G, 8 2B, 2 HR, .296/.354/.493/.847
James Ziemba: 2.1 IP, 7 K - 6'10" lefty, 24 IP, 2.25 ERA, .221 BAA, 1.25 WHIP, 11 BB, 28 K

DSL Angels (32-34) lost 2-8 vs. DSL Cardinals (29-37)
Rafael Fortunato: 4 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, BB, 6 K - 52.2 IP, 2.56 ERA, .233 BAA, 1.12 WHIP
Andersson Espinal: 4 IP, 3 H, ER, 2 BB, 2 K - rough first season  (so far) for 17 y/o LHP - 14.2 IP, 11.05 ERA, .379 BAA, 2.39 WHIP, 10 BB, 10 K
Faustino Antigua: 0 IP, 2 ER, 2 BB - another rough first season (so far) for 18 y/o RHP - 5 IP, 16.20 ERA, 12 BB, 8 K, .300 BAA, 3.60 WHIP

DSL Angels (32-33) vs. DSL Cardinals (28-37) make-up of 8/8 PPD - also postponed.

Yeah, I've been wondering about that too...

Here comes Stanton,or Verlander.

It does seem a little weird that all of the top prospects were off for over the same span of a day or two. And all have been hot as hell lately.
No Marsh or Adell last night either.

Crazy I know.

I doubt it's a coincidence. Maybe this warrants a thread on the board?

If it is Verlander I'll jump off a cliff. I do not want him or his contract.

Stanton on the other hand..... *starts dancing*

What if it's Verlander and Upton and we give up little in the way of prospects, but take on their salaries? Upton may opt out after this season too so.

I'm just not a fan of JV. Upton would be okay at $22M I think but the price for a 1/4 season is all we should pay for him IMO. Tigers are in a weird place with Justin, honestly. You don't know if he will opt-out so do you still try to trade him or do you wait and see if stays or leaves? They can't get any real value for him in August because teams are afraid he will opt-out so they don't want to send more than a token prospect. Then if he stays you might get a little more value out of him in the off-season? Hard to tell. I think the Tigers would be happy if he opts-out to be honest.

Thursday, August 24th, 2017:
Salt Lake (66-65)
 won 12-0 vs. Albuquerque (62-68)
Bees torched Rockies top SP prospect Jeff Hoffman for 6 runs, chasing him after only 0.2 IP
Michael Hermosillo: 1-5, R, 2B, RBI, K
Ramon Flores: 3-4, 3 R, 2B, 3B, BB, K
Rey Navarro: 3-4, 2 R, 2 2B, 4 RBI, BB - in August (21 G, 82 AB): .305/.374/.463/.837
David Fletcher: 0-4, R, BB, K - his slash at AAA is down to .224/.262/.269/.531 in 36 G, 156 AB
Nolan Fontana: 1-3, 2 R, 2B, RBI, 2 BB
Tony Sanchez: 2-5, R, Grand Slam HR (4), 4 RBI
Jaime Barria (AAA Debut): 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K - 55 pitches, 38 strikes
Fernando Salas: IP, H, 2 K

Mobile (61-67) won 12-5 vs. Biloxi (64-62)
Brennon Lund: 0-5, R, RBI, 2 K
Matt Thaiss: 2-3, 3 R, HR (1), 2 RBI, 3 BB, K - his August slash (18 G, 61 AB): .361/.488/.557/1.045 with 9 2B, HR, 17 BB, 17 K
Jose Rojas: 0-5, R
Zach Gibbons: 1-6, 2B, BB, K
Jake Jewell: 3 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
Adam Hofacket: 2.1 IP, 3 K
A little shout-out to...
Zach Houchins: 3-6, 2 R, HR (13), RBI, K - I believe he is now the leading HR hitter in the Angels minor league system.
His second half slash has been pretty solid - 55 G, 209 AB: .268/.326/.455/.781 with 10 2B, 1 3B, 9 HR, 17 BB, 32 K
I could see him moving up to Salt Lake nice year and putting up good offensive numbers and possibly play himself into a Jefry Marte-type.

Inland Empire (60-70) won 19-15 in 10 innings vs. Lancaster (73-57)
Backed on the strength of a 5-run 10th....
Jahmai Jones: 1-6, 2 R, HR (5), RBI - 25 game hitting streak
Jack Kruger: 2-6, 3 R, 2 RBI, BB - slashing .292/.342/.368/.710 at IE (26 G, 106 AB) with 37% CS%
Jared Walsh: 3-5, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB
Michael Barash: 5-6, 2 R, HR (9), 4 RBI, BB, K
Keith Grieshaber: 2-6, R, HR (2), 3 RBI, 2 K, 2 E (8)
Jake Yacinich: 1-6, R, 2B, BB, 2 K, 2 E (16) - for a defense-first shortstop, dude makes a lot of errors
Brandon Diaz: 2-4, 2 R, 2 2B, RBI, 2 BB, SB (6)
Huge game for....
Jordan Zimmerman: 6-7, 5 R, 2 2B, HR (4), 3 RBI
He's had himself a pretty nice season at IE (36 G, 157 AB): .293/.333/.465/.798 with 18 XBH, 8 BB, 36 K. He was absolutely terrible when he jumped from Orem to Burlington last season, so to see him doing well at IE is encouraging.

Burlington (56-73) lost 5-7 vs. Clinton (59-68)
Brandon Sandoval: 3-5, R, K, SB (2)
Jonah Todd: 1-3, BB, 2 K
Richard Fecteau: 2-4, 2 R, HR (8), 3 RBI, BB, K, E (7) - he just keeps hitting - .308/.356/.497/.854 in 48 G, 185 AB, 18 XBH, 11 BB, 27 K
Andrew Vinson: 5 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 4 K - still pitching very well recently: last 10 GS - 49.1 IP, 2.74 ERA, 42 H, 11 BB, 41 K
Jonah Wesely: 2 IP, 2 H, K

Orem (39-20) lost 4-9 to Grand Junction (32-28)
Jo Adell (hitting leadoff): 2-5, 2 R, 2B, 2 K - he's now listed on the boxscore and roster as Jo Adell instead of Jordon.
Julio Garcia: 1-4, 2B, RBI, 2 K
Franklin Torres: 1-4, R, HR (5), RBI, K
Kevin Williams: 2-3, R, 2 2B
Torii Hunter: 1-3, 2B, RBI, BB
Cole Duensing: 5 IP, 9 H, 7 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 2 HR
Luke Lind: 4 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, BB, 8 K - on the season, he has 51 strikeouts in 30.1 IP between AZL/Orem - 3.86 ERA, .223 BAA, 1.05 WHIP

AZL Angels (26-23) lost 2-5 to AZL Dodgers (33-16)
Brendon Sanger: 0-3, 3 K - starting a rehab assignment, first game since 7/12
Jared Foster: 1-3 - starting a rehab assignment, first game since 5/14
Nonie Williams: 0-2 2 BB
Gleyvin Pineda: 2-3, R, BB
Manuel Herazo: 1-1, R, PH HR (1), 2 RBI

Cole Duensing has been horrible so far. He's as raw as @tdawg87 after a Grindr hookup.

Is it just me, or does it seem like Jo "I prefer Jordon, but its not my name" Adell strikes out a ton?  Looking it up after writing that...

Maybe not as bad as I thought...38 Ks in 36 games. Not good, but not abyssmal. Hopefully he works on that walk to K ratio (11-38) as that's the type of thing that makes the difference between being pretty good and great.

He is only 18 years old, he has plenty of time AJ to make improvements. Not everyone explodes out of the gate like Mike Trout or Andrew Benintendi for instance.

Jordon Adell has always had swing and miss concerns. We'll see how he develops in time

I'd say he kind of has though. He had a .897 OPS in the AZL.

Not quite at Trout's level but still very impressive.

Trout vs. Adell  (whatever.  I'm comping them so get over it. )

Trout with the August bday so his first season was his 17yo vs. Adell who was 18 as of April.  So they were four month a part to start their careers.

Trout in AZL - .360/.418/.506/.925 in 187 PA.  7 doubles, 7 triples, 1 hr, 13 sb, 2 cs, 22bb, 34k

Adell in AZL - ..288/.351/.542/.894 in 156 PA. 6 doubles, 6 triples, 4 hr, 5 sb, 0 cs.  10bb, 32k.

So Adell will be like Trout with a little less patience.  :)

From a scouting perspective they're so different and similar at the same time.

You look at both of them and think they both should be playing football, but one a wide receiver, the other a linebacker. They both have a ton of power, but Trout's is more of the brute force and Adell's is more the fluid motion, or "whipping" type. They both can fly. With Adell, you see him, it makes sense, but he's even faster than you'd think, which is remarkable. With Trout, it was the more "drop whatever you're doing, you have to see this." type. People that big don't move that fast, but Trout does. Then there's the athleticism. Adell will look like he's toying with the opposition, and he probably is. He's just that much better. Whereas Trout's athleticism was more the type where you just know he was born to be a ball player. Every required skill in baseball he did better than the player with the best tool on your team.

Your best defender? Trout is better. Best power hitter, Trout is better. Fastest runner? Trout is faster.

My conclusion is this. Trout is a once in a generation player, maybe once in a lifetime. Adell is a once every few years type of talent. High school kids with his physical prowess that play baseball are very few and far between.

From BA:

11. Jahmai Jones, OF, Angels (19)
High Class A Inland Empire (California)

If the Orioles’ farm system has taken a step forward, the same thing can be said about the Angels. That is in part because of the most recent draft class, but the development of players such as Jones are a big reason for it as well. After a solid first half in the Midwest League, Jones has taken off since arriving in Inland Empire. The toolsy outfielder has a 25-game hit streak and he has hits in 38 of his past 39 games.
