Friday, August 25th, 2017:
Salt Lake (66-66) lost 1-3 to Albuquerque (63-68)
Michael Hermosillo: 1-4, K, OF assist
David Fletcher: 1-3, R, SB (7)
Daniel Wright: 7 IP, 3 ER, BB, 5 K
Noe Ramirez: IP

Mobile (61-68) lost 0-4 vs. Biloxi (65-62)
Matt Thaiss: 0-4, 2 K, E (2) - still slashing a robust .315/.420/.420/.840 in 39 G, 143 AB with 13 XBH, 27 BB, 39 K
Taylor Ward: 0-2, 2 BB, K - his AA slash is also still pretty - .326/.455/.465/.920 in 26 G, 86 AB with 6 XBH, 20 BB, 12 K
Luis Pena (Second AA start): 4.1 IP, 5 H, ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 85 pitches, 48 strikes -  last 10 GS: 57.2 IP, 3.75 ERA, 59 H, 17 BB, 73 K - only 22 years old

Inland Empire (60-71) lost 1-12 to Rancho Cucamonga (73-58)
Jahmai Jones: 0-2, BB - the streak is over at 25 games
Erik Manoah (2nd A+ start): 2.2 IP, 5 H, 6 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, HR

Burlington (57-73) won 6-5 vs. Beloit (60-69)
Leonardo Rivas: 1-3, 2 R, BB, K - finally getting a groove in Burl., .333 in last 10 games, with 11 BB, 8 K - slash of .274/.438/.323/.760 overall at Burl.
Jonah Todd: 1-4, R, RBI, BB
Richard Fecteau: 2-4, R, RBI
Brandon Sandoval: 2-4, R, RBI, OF assist
Luis Madero: 4 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, K, HR
Let's take a look at...
Carlos Salazar: 2 IP, H, 3 K - he has been outrageously wild his entire career - in 218.1 IP he's struck out 256 - but walked 198! But he has also been very difficult to hit - only a .213 BAA in that time, and only 10 home runs allowed (or 0.4 HR/9) so walks have always been his downfall.
Could the Angels find a way to rein in his control without affecting his strikeouts, or without making him more hittable?
with the Braves: H9 7.1 HR9 0.4 BB9 8.4 K9 10.1 ERA 4.85
with the Angels: H9 6.5 HR9 0.6 BB9 6.8 K9 13.7 ERA 3.72
Small sample size, but good return so far, and chance that at only 22 he could still shoot up as a relief prospect very quickly.

Orem (40-20) won 11-1 vs. Grand Junction (32-29)
Jo Adell: 3-5, R, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI - missed the cycle by a HR
Julio Garcia: 0-4, R, E (1)
Brandon Marsh: 3-4, 3 R, 2B, HR (4), 3 RBI - missed the cycle by a 3B
Jeyson Sanchez: 2-4, 2 R, 2 HR (10), 5 RBI - leads all Angels minor leagues with 14 HR. In 17 G, 62 AB - .419/.486/1.016/1.502 with 10 HR
Kevin Williams: 1-3, R, 2B, BB, K, E (2)
Simon Mathews: 5 IP, H, ER, 2 BB, 7 K, HR - undrafted FA signed this year: 42 IP, 3.21 ERA, 13 BB, 47 K, .261 BAA, 1.33 WHIP (AZL/Mob/Orem)
Jason Alexander: 4 IP, 2 H, 6 K

I'm kind of surprised Pearson has struggled so much this year. I was under the impression he was relatively polished. Not sure why he's struggled so much in AZL.

I'm not quite worried yet, just more in the "hmm" stage. If he struggles to start next year in low-A ball (assuming they don't send him to extended camp and then Orem), I will be concerned.

The Angels could really be aggressive with Marsh and Adell next year by starting them both at Inland Empire.

For reference, Trout was in A+ to finish his age 18 season, and in AA by his age 19 season.

Marsh will be 20 and Adell will be 19.

Almost certainly not going to happen but it would definitely signal a huge change in this org's philosophy.

I've decided on my new comp for Matt Thaiss.......Joey Votto.

Thought of this as a bit of a joke at first, but it's not tremendously far off.  Votto's power started to develop much earlier.  Thaiss isn't likely to every be a 25-30 hr guy.  But a lot of the other periphs are pretty close.

I was thinking more like Yonder Alonso but what the hell, shoot for the moon.

I still dont understand why Adell hasn't played in the OF yet. It's not like he's not using his wheels on the basepaths, why not the field?

Pure guess on my part, but I'm assuming it's because he's young enough, athletic enough, and sound enough defensively already that they just want him to focus on the offensive side as he adjusts to better competition and pro ball. They don't want him risking getting hurt on the field and missing key time developing at the plate and don't feel his defense needs enough help to merit throwing him out there right away.

I wonder if he's got a bit of a nagging arm issue.  He was also a pitcher in high school.

Or they could be working him out at another position but he's not game ready yet.  My guess, is the above though.

I don't think they would have them totally skip Burlington, do you? Did Trout ever spend anytime in Burlington?

Edit:

I looked it up, he totally skipped Orem and went straight to Cedar Rapids. I forgot they changed affiliates for their A team a few years ago.

Did a google search and apparently Mendez was hit in the chest and suffered a cardiac event.  Listed in critical but stable condition.

I hear what you are saying in terms of the type of player, in a similar sense that Bryan Buxton is a similar type of player as Mike Trout. Votto is a pure hitter whose power emerged from hitting the ball square, but not necessary trying to loft it over the fence every time. If Thaiss keeps doing what he's doing, he'll eventually hit in the .290-.300+ range, a .370+ OBP, and lots of doubles, and doubles sometimes turn into HR. But I don't see him ever hitting more than 20-25 HR a year, and maybe more in the 15-20 range.

I know I don't need to say this, but it is very unlikely that Thaiss is every as good as Votto. Votto is this era's Edgar Martinez - one of the three or four very best hitters of the last ten years, but also perhaps one of the most underappreciated super-stars.

of course.  I was just comparing their minor league numbers.  Votto is a fringy HOFer.  I think if Thaiss become an average everyday 1bman, we'll be happy.

Votto has HoF talent, just needs HoF longevity. He is not so good (like Trout, or prime Pujols) that he just needs to get to 10 seasons to get in, which he's done already. He probably needs three or four more good seasons to get in.

As for Thaiss, the AL cumulative average for a 1B is .261/.337/.467 this year, although that includes many players who aren't regulars. So let's say an "average everyday first baseman" hits around .270/.340/.480, or something like that (and in a high offense context). I agree that is very possible for him, although would guess his version of that would be more like .290/.370/.450.

As I've said before, I think the worst-case reasonable scenario is that he hits around .270/.350/.400 with solid plate discipline but little power, and isn't good enough to be a regular but floats around as a platoon type or starter on either a non-championship team or one with no better options. The best-case scenario that is at all possible is that he continues to develop his already strong approach and the power eventually comes, and he turns into a borderline star, hitting close to .300/.400/.500 - sort of a poor man's Joey Votto. But more than likely, he hits somewhere in between: as I said, .290/.370/.450, which would be really nice to have in our lineup, but is not all-star caliber for a first baseman.
