Plus, think of Jahmai playing 2B like this. If he can be our starting 2B, but also our 4th OF, his spot on the roster becomes as unique and valuable as Cozart's this year. That sort of versatility while also being a starting caliber player gives the lineup a ton of flexibility, and flexibility is what leads to things like a certain Japanese phenom both hitting and pitching.

Those exciting developments aren't possible without a starting infielder being able to also handle a reserve role elsewhere on the diamond.

Taylor Ward as a back-up CIF who could serve as an emergency catcher fits into that too, if he develops. Could allow them to option a back-up catcher to AAA for a series or two. Think we're going to see a lot more Swiss Army knife type bench players in the bigs and on the Angels in years to come.

Surprised they kept Rivas down.

at the point now where you have to think about at bats.

2b/SS depth

AAA

2b - Cowart, Schimpf, Fletcher, Fernandez, Walsh

SS - Burriss, Fletcher, Fontana (when Kinsler is activated), Walsh

AA

2b - Zimmerman, Moyer

SS - Yacinich, Moyer

A+

2b - Jones, Ramer and the SS below

SS -  Rengifo*, Justus, Baldoquin

A

2b - Pineda, Torres

SS - Rivas

* Rengifo was a pickup from the rays and previously sea.  hit 12hrs in A ball as a SS at age 20.  .713 ops overall.  Fringe guy to put in the back of your mind.

Manual Guzman was another pickup from the minor's free agent pool.  Age 22 at Orem last year with a 986 ops and 41bb/28k in 274 PA with a .360 BA.  can play 2b/3b/SS.  Would have thought he'd start in A.

Time to add another affiliate?  Maybe short season A.  Most franchises have anywhere from 7-9 minor league teams.  We have 7.   Lots of clubs have two Foreign teams.

We used to have Boise in the NWL but then added the AZL team and Orem.

I figured Jahmai would be in AA based on what he did in his 40 game stint in the Cal League. Not really that small of a sample.

Provided he stays in the OF, I imagine he'll have a track similar to Hermosillo's 2017; a quick promotion if he starts hot at IE, and a shot at landing in SLC before year's end. The Mobile OF shouldn't be tough to crack.

Now, if the 2B experiment becomes serious, they may want him in a familiar environment while he learns a new position.

By Inland Empire 66ers | April 2, 2018 7:18 PM ET

San Bernardino, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino, in conjunction with its parent-club the Los Angeles Angels, announced the 2018 Sixers' tentative roster for Opening Night on Thursday April 5th. First year manager Ryan Barba will have 11 players (in bold) on his roster with experience in the 66ers' uniform as the club opens its eighth season as the Angels California League affiliate.

On the mound the 66ers will feature LHP Adrian Almeida, LHP Nate Bertness, RHP Griffin Canning, RHP Ryan Clark , RHP Joe Gatto , RHP Kyle Halbohn, RHP Erik Manoah , RHP Daniel Procopio, RHP Connor Riley, RHP Zac Ryan, RHP Carlos Salazar, RHP Tyler Stevens and LHP Jose Suarez. The catching corps will consist of Jack Kruger and Julian Leon .

The 66ers roster features six infielders. Roberto Baldoquin , Richard Fecteau, Jahmai Jones , Luis Rengifo, Jared Walsh and Jordan Zimmerman will all patrol the dirt at San Manuel Stadium. In the outfield a quartet of players are slated for San Bernardino: Derek Jenkins , Jonah Todd, Ryan Vega and Kevin Williams.

The 66ers will return 80 percent of their final 2017 rotation with Bertness, Clark, Gatto and Manoah. Canning is a 2017 second round pick of the Angels; the UCLA product will be making his professional debut with the Sixers. Jones, who had a 25-game hitting streak with Inland Empire last season, returns to the club but will be transitioning to second base from the outfield.

2018's Under-the-Radar Prospects

MiLB.com staff predicts big seasons for lesser-known players

Los Angeles Angels: Stiward Aquino, RHP

A 6-foot-6 right-hander who turns 19 in June, Aquino already works comfortably with a lively fastball in the mid-90s. He has a great spin rate on that offering and his curveball, giving him the foundation to develop into a truly dangerous pitcher -- especially if his changeup improves. He's already impressed at the Rookie level, fanning 29 over 23 2/3 innings in the Dominican Summer League and then making two fine relief appearances in the Arizona League last year.

Angels' Chris Rodriguez: On DL with back injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Rodriguez has a stress reaction in his back and will open the year on the disabled list at Low-A Burlington, MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo reports.

Considered by some to be the Angels' top pitching prospect in the minor leagues, Rodriguez will miss a good chunk of the first half of the season with this injury. He has legitimate mid-rotation upside, with a plus fastball, a changeup that projects as a second plus pitch, and two quality breaking balls. The 19-year-old righty didn't post a pretty ERA (5.84) in 24.2 innings at Low-A last year, but his 3.17 FIP was more indicative of how well he pitched.
