Velocity usually stabilizes pretty quickly so the fact that he's still averaging 83-84 MPH is concerning. Tonight's start looked exactly like his first one. Was able to get through the order the first time despite the weak velocity...but then the team's teed off on him the 2nd time through

 

Royals were hitting lasers all over the field vs Weav's 83 MPH cheese. Dude looks like he's trying to muscle up on things and all that ends up happening is his FB sails way up high and out of the zone for easy balls

 

This isn't good. Weav's been awesome here for a long time but this may finally be the year where the velocity decline finally does him in. They really need a bounceback year from CJ Wilson in a big way

The velocity drop-off has been slow but gradual the last few years...but this year it's a 2 MPH drop from what already wasn't very good velocity. He was slightly over 86 MPH on his average FB last season....this year we're looking at 81-84 MPH with some "peaks" at 85. Damn man

I've been a Jered Weaver fan for a long time so I take absolutely no pleasure in saying this, but Jered is probably finished, at least as a SP. If he's willing to go to the pen maybe he can help the team. Right now he's a detriment and that hurts to say it.

He's had an extreme dropoff in his stuff--I throw harder than him. He's only has 1 year left, and I think he was already planning on calling it a career after that. 1 year sooner not that extreme.

People point to Gred Maddux but he had tons of movement and pinpoint accuracy on his pitches.  Weaver's fastball is pretty straight, and he doesn't have Maddux like control.  Hell, not really anyone does.

 

This pitching staff has some major issues.  Even worse if Richards doesn't dominate when he gets back.

Might make sense to move him to the pen if he doesn't bounce back in the next 3-4 starts. I think he would be great out of the pen. Might even make a good closer next year. Then we could let street walk and save money. Weaver is nails the first time through the order. It's the 2nd time through when the hitters get their timing down is when he is getting tagged. Then it gives Bedrock time to develop as the closer for 2017, thoughts?

Not looking good. That said, its WAY too early to pull the plug on Weaver. He gets many more chances to try to figure it out. My sense is that if he doesn't look any better after a few more starts then he'll be put on the DL with "elbow tightness" to try to figure it out.
