Religion of Peace

When violence towards others is in ones holy scripture, how does one say their religion is peacefull? Question of the millennium.

Thats pretty much every religion. "Our god(s) is/are the only true god(s) and everyone else is wrong"

They entered into a covenant to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and soul; and everyone who would not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, was to be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman. (2 Chronicles 15:12-13 NAB).

Anyone arrogant enough to reject the verdict of the judge or of the priest who represents the LORD your God must be put to death. Such evil must be purged from Israel. (Deuteronomy 17:12 NLT)

Or non-religion. "There is no God and everyone else is wrong."

Or universalism. "All religions are equally true, and anyone who disagrees with my worldview is wrong."

Like MT said, it's erroneous to take our 21st-century, western views and use them to judge the ethics of 4,000 years ago. In any case, Jesus removed the need for violence in God's name. Anyone who uses Christianity as a justification for murder or persecution believes in a different Jesus than the one of the Bible.

There is a popular belief that if religion ceased to exist, the world would be more peaceful. Humans are selfish by nature and will use ANYTHING to justify their lust for power. For the people who fight over religion, if there were no religion, they'd be killing people for some other reason. If you study the religion-less societies that existed during the 20th century, you'll see that they were just as violent, if not more violent, than societies plagued with religious violence.

Kind of hard to ignore the motive when looking at the results of the act.

This group chose religion to justify themselves. Could have just as easily been race, ethnicity, national origin, The point being that people like to separate into groups and then try to eliminate the rivals and they use many means to justify their actions. To say this happened because Islam is violent, as opposed to saying it's because people are thinly veiled savages at heart, is to discredit the one billion+ Muslims who went about their business this week without committing any murders and to give a pass to the non-Muslims around the world who were busy killing as usual.

When I was in Berkeley, we had a discussion group that met weekly where we discussed the finer nuances of what acceptable means are to achieve one's goal when it comes to expression of their religion. We pretty unanimously decided that cases like this are alright given the oppression of Muslim beliefs around the world.
