No it wasn't. The Padres got the better end of the deal, but the Nats got a borderline top 10 prospect and three other top 100 guys (or recent top 100 guy, in Gore's case). Not as good as it could have been, but not terrible.

And for that the Pads get Soto.... and the Bell kicker.... (that's 2 MLB proven solid or better bats, for 3 weak loto tickets)...

 

I'd be pissed if I was a Nats fan...

Only this year’s salary, is the way I read it.  Padres would have paid the remaining.

Pretty legit return IMO, but trading a player of Soto's caliber and at the age he's at is gonna be tough to overcome from a value standpoint.

The young pitcher in the deal has a huge upside also. Both teams did well.

I'll put it like this. If the Padres offered CJ Abrams, Robert Hassell III, Mackenzie Gore, plus another high end pitching prospect and Luke Voit for Shohei Ohtani....I take that action.

Abrams is going to hit .280, and steal 40 bases from the SS position. Gore is a front of the rotation starter. Hassell, i think is going to be a Randal Grichuk you're of starter with died and power, except his OBP will be higher. Grichuk remains a free swinger to this day. The other pitching prospect, had elite reliever floor from what I understand, plus a starting DH in Voit.
