My mom is a protesting, Bernie loving, proudly socialist feminist who never met a popular movie she actually liked, except woke ones like Black Panther.

Damn, I'm glad she opted to keep you.

Ha! That does sound like an element of my movie circle but probably the least influential. I get most of my movie takes from movie podcasts, this thread and a couple Trumpers with strangely good taste in movies.

We've been watching Yellowstone.

Not perfect but it's a good show.

Kind of a mash-up of Godfather and Justified, with a sprinkling of Banshee.

Maybe living in Idaho makes me more receptive to this kind of show.

Back when I was a kid all the most popular shows on TV were westerns. This show reminds me of that.

Kevin Costner's best work IMO, except maybe for Tin Cup.

Recommend.

The Midnight Sky

So this movie really snuck up on me. I almost skipped it since I hadn't heard anything good about it and it has some pretty poor ratings online. It's easy to understand why, when you have a post-apocalyptic scifi film that is more 2001 than Mandalorian. Add in a few easily nitpickable plot elements and I can see where some reviewers are turned off. But while the film lacks what it takes to satisfy general audiences it should easily score points from more reflective movie fans who appreciate interesting questions over simple answers.

I couldn’t get into it, but I appreciate your description.

started S3 of The Shield last night. Man, Vic is always up to his eyeballs in trouble. It's a good show but it's so intense. I need an episode here and there where all they do is arrest a couple of jay-walkers and shut down an illegal food truck.

You should watch Pacific Palisades 911

That's what makes it exceptional.

Honestly, Yellowstone plays like a Western version of Sons of Anarchy. Replace bikers with cowboys, and bikes with horses and pickup trucks, and they're extremely similar shows. They're even shot the same and use music in largely the same way. Makes sense, as the guy who writes Yellowstone was heavily involved in SOA too.

Except SOA was entertaining.

Meh, I have a friend who was an extra on one of the episodes.

He played a dead guy.

if you remember the 7 foot tall black guy from the first season, that's my former student. i never watched the show so i don't know what his character's name was. i think he may have met with an untimely demise.

A black guy on SOA?

Yeah, he died.
