The New York Times has agreed to acquire the The Athletic in an all-cash deal valuing the sports media startup at $550 million, a source familiar with the deal confirmed to Axios.

Why it matters: It's a huge victory for The Athletic, which had been shopping a deal for months. The subscription-based sports media company was under pressure to sell in light of how much cash it's lost over the past two years.

The Athletic co-founders Alex Mather and Adam Hansmann will stay on after the deal, expected to be announced at market close Thursday.

Interesting acquisition. I subscribe to the NYT for like $4 a month, so hopefully this means I can read Athletic articles too.

Starbucks free wifi used to include subscriptions to all of the major news services, including the NYT. I used to spend an hour at our local in the morning waiting for traffic to die down and scanned multiple sources. Working from home doesn't necessitate that.

The Times is weird. They are the polar opposite of the Wall Street Journal; their editorial board is super left wing, but they do about 1/2 (if not more) of the good, actual reporting done by all mainstream news sources (even if it is hidden under headlines that slant hard left). The Wall Street Journal editorial board shades to the right (though much less than they used to), and their actual reporting is mostly garbage.

The NYT is extremely dog shit for a whole bunch of reasons but none of it has anything to do with whatever Scotty is making up.

What's ironic is that the NYT and other "MSM" outlets are directly responsible for the rise of a certain political figure who's beloved by the segment that so easily calls out those outlets.

It’s all a show dude.  They’re all going to be like flies on shit when my man is back on the trail in a couple of years.

It's dogshit for the same reason that virtually every semi-organized news site these days is dogshit. Frankly this and other independent boards/blogs have better information and quality of discourse than any of these "news" sites.
