Taiwan absolutely deserves credit for how they handled it but they have a few things we don't working in their favor.  First they're an island so if they really want to lock it down no one in or out or anyone coming in goes into quarantine for x days.  They also monitored people they knew had been traveling and might have been exposed whereas in the US we've got people who were supposed to self quarantine that couldn't do that for 14 days and risked other people's health. All politics aside if either side wanted to cancel flights to/from a region the other side will object because that's how the two sides operate and they'll be too busy fighting about it to actually accomplish something in time.  Also it's the American way to claim something like that violates people's rights even though it's for the greater good.  From the article Taiwan sent a group of experts to China back in January who despite having limited access got a better feel for what was really going on while a lot of the rest of the world didn't take it seriously enough or believed what China said as they downplayed it.  In many Asian cultures when hard times hit people band together, respect others and don't act like animals; see the Japan tsunami.  In the US people use it as a reason to act like animals while some loot or riot and others use money they get from the government to go to strip clubs and buy booze; see Hurricane Katrina.  Hell right now we've got people on beaches in Florida who just don't give a **** and are completely ignoring what the rest of the country is trying to accomplish which is to flatten the curve.  'Merica

I think that's why mother nature is trying to thin the herd but being the way we are we could never let people die but we'll bail them out for their stupidity while they put other people's lives at risk.  Idiocracy isn't that far off.

Advances in machine learning hint at how bots could become more humanlike. IBM researchers demonstrated a system capable of conjuring up a reasonably coherent argument by mining text. And Google’s Duplex software also shows how AI systems can learn to mimic the nuances of human conversation.

User profile
The most common way to tell if an account is fake is to check out the profile. The most rudimentary bots lack a photo, a link, or any bio. More sophisticated ones might use a photo stolen from the web, or an automatically generated account name.

So all I need is to upload a picture of an ass and I am legit?

US plan warns coronavirus pandemic could last 18 months: report

This is why I have huge doubts about this shit. Trump is starting to get a few compliments from CNN and MSNBC and that makes me nervous. A few weeks is not a huge deal but anything more than that needs to be brought before the people. Sadly, conservatives are a lot more willing to hand over their freedom to bush or trump vs obama.

Brought before the people? To vote on? A national referendum?

Then why bother electing a president and congress in the first place? Why have healthcare professionals and experts. We elect them to lead, especially in times of crisis. When an airplane is going down, you don't vote on how to proceed. You want shit for brains in Florida who just wants to party? Or the asshats buying 4 cases of toilet paper? If they aren't leading...stop voting for dumb asses.

Yes, but then look at Italy which has scary death rate numbers.  And probably Iran, too but they aren’t being forthcoming.

From what I can gather we still don’t know much about the virus and were using preliminary info out of China as our guide.  Plus, the virus is mutating as it works it way though society. Now apparently these things become less dangerous as they learn their new host (they don’t want us to die), but sometimes they fuck up and become worse (second wave of 1918 flu).

We really don’t know shit yet.

Yes honest data is a real problem worldwide. My concern is we are using mass numbers of unknown carrier numbers to support shutdowns and not adjusting the death rate accordingly.  I have no problem with temporary shutdowns but we need to be very careful as the government looks to extend these.  An 18 month shutdown will have generational impacts that may out weigh current lives lost. We really do need reliable numbers to make that type of long term decision. pretty huge difference between 2.3 and .23% in terms of lives lost. Trump isnt a small government guy and his base is loyal enough to give away freedoms if he proposes it.  Same ones who bitch about Bernie. I don't believe the good Lord created us to hunker down in fear for 18 months. Powerful people never let an emergency or tragedy go to waste. Patriot Act sounded good at first, now we cant go on an airplane without someone taking a picture of our dick

Obviously, elected officials would vote. After this is done, it would be a good time to revisit existing powers and establish constitutional powers as needed for a lot of these procedures.  I can't really speak to the Bernie supporters down in Florida.

“We need the federal government to play its role,” Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York said Monday. “The federal government has tremendous capacity.”

Much of that capacity is untapped. Hospital ships are at port. The Department of Veterans Affairs, legally designated as the backup health care system in national emergencies, awaits requests for help. The veterans department has a surplus of beds in many of its 172 hospital centers and a robust number of special rooms for patients with breathing disorders.

The sprawling system of emergency doctors and nurses ready to be deployed by the Department of Health and Human Services — known as the National Disaster Medical System — is also still waiting for orders, other than to staff locations where passengers offloaded from cruise ships are being quarantined.

Reference the rumors of the govt handing out checks...

Anyone think masks would be a better idea?

Being honest here, but if we all could mask up, wouldnt the need to quarantine drop?

I have a lot of masks.

So does Mrs. Irwin.

They can print money quicker then they can manufacture masks.

the military still has old m40 masks just collecting  dust at supply depots. wouldnt be a bad idea  to get these to our hospital workers. i have no idea how effective the filter would be but I would hope it was built for things a lot stronger

Feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps. Feel free to share this to others who don’t understand...

It has to do with RNA sequencing.... I.e. genetics.

Seasonal flu is an “all human virus”. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot.

Novel viruses, come from animals.... the WHO tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once, one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humans... then it’s a problem, Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunity.. the RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isn’t human, and the human immune system doesn’t recognize it so, we can’t fight it off.

Now.... sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human, for years it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human... once that happens..we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, thats what decides how contagious, or how deadly it’s gonna be..

H1N1 was deadly....but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. It’s RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently, too.

Fast forward.

Now, here comes this Coronavirus... it existed in animals only, for nobody knows how long...but one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China, in November 2019, it mutated and made the jump from animal to people. At first, only animals could give it to a person... But here is the scary part.... in just TWO WEEKS it mutated again and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery”

This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human” virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity). Took off like a rocket. And this was because, Humans have no known immunity...doctors have no known medicines for it.

And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way the way that it causes great damage to human lungs..

That’s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenza.... this one is slippery AF. And it’s a lung eater...And, it’s already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain s, and strain L....which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine.

We really have no tools in our shed, with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu.

Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him, till the Black Plague passed...(honestly...I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had no tools in his shed, except social isolation...

And let me end by saying....right now it’s hitting older folks harder... but this genome is so slippery...if it mutates again (and it will). Who is to say, what it will do next.

Be smart folks... acting like you’re unafraid is so not sexy right now.
