What will the Astros Punishment be?

Just a bunch of periphery stuff that won't hurt the organization. Darn they lost a draft pick, they still have 30+ others. Darn, they won't get the top international talent for three years, they still have elite prospects in their system. Darn, the front office will pay a couple million to cover the fines of all the coaches, it won't hurt their financial standing. Darn, Kevin Goldstein will get fired, then another random peon will take his place.

There farm system has been depleted trading for Verlander, Cole, and Grienke over the last 3 years. Forrest Whitley is their last top 100 prospect and could be in their rotation soon. Their farm is having a serious drought condition.

To me, besides the testimony, emails, and video evidence we don't have access to, but MLB does, we don't know exactly how it worked.

We do have access to stats...

In 2016, Marwin Gonzalez hit .254 with a .293 OBP. He hit .303 with a .377 OBP in 2017.

Jake Marisnick hit .209 with a .257 OBP. He hit .243 with a .319 OBP in 2017.

Gurriel hit .262 with a .292 OBP. He hit .299 with a .332 OBP in 2017.

Josh Reddick hit .314 with a .363 OBP. In the previous season with the Dodgers and A's, he hit .281 with a .345 OBP.

Correra hit .274 with a .361 OBP, in 2016, then hit .315 with a .390 OBP.,.. his slugging also increased.

Everyone hit better...everyone.

What did their home/away splits look like?

Honestly, I think it'll be a slap on the wrist. They won't give up their World Series, no one will get a lifetime ban. Chances are, they'll lose a draft pick, and be banned from signing any international free agents for more than 10k for like two or three years. The manager and coaches will each get fined what's basically pocket change (which the front office will pay) and guys like Kevin Goldstein will be fired and banned for like 5 seasons.

If MLB really wanted to deter teams from every doing this again, they'd take away the world series, fire and ban the entire coaching staff and higher up front office staff, and take away every draft pick and every international signing from the team for last year and this year and not allow the organization to sign or extend any player on a major league contract for more than 5 million for three years

It would essentially make the Astros dead in the water as an organization and force them to rebuild with entirely new personnel. They wouldn't be competitive again for another 5+ years.

Yeah, this is pretty much where i am as well.  MLB cant afford to invalidate titles so they wont do anything drastic even in the face of obvious cheating.
what they should do, and what they will do, are 2 very different universes.

If they are guilty then here would be my punishment.

Lifetime (I didn’t say that) ban for the GM

Suspend the Manager equal to the number of years they can prove cheating occurred

Lose 1st round picks for 3 years

Lose International Pool Money for 3 years

Any player they can prove that cheated should be suspended for post season play, which means they probably shouldn’t be on the team as of September 1st because you set your playoff roster by players that are eligible on that day.  This also diminishes the chances of actually making the playoffs.

Honestly, If there is distinct and overwhelming evidence of MORE than just the trashcan banging then I think they get more severe punishment. If they determine they had someone in the bullpen helping out and were using those bandaid-like buzzers then I'd like to see a more harsh punishment handed down.
punishment that starts with loss of draft picks and international spending. Something that looks like this:

-If players accepted buzzer bandaids then those individual players should be suspended for a minimum of 30 games without pay.
-If there was clear evidence in cheating during their 2017 World Series run then their title should be taken away.
-if and all coaches involved should be suspended for 30 games.
-All front office members involved should be suspended for at least 80 games.
-Anyone who was behind starting the idea should be banned for 5 years.
-Additional punishment involves losing draft picks and international money taken away and capped.

I would add that the Astros would be ineligible for the post season at least for 2020.  That would send a clear message regarding organizational cheating.  It won't happen...I am guessing the owners would never allow it.

I like the concept of a three season Post-Season Ban, but I do feel that helps the Angels, A's, & Rangers a lot, so the other teams in the AL may not like it. Of course, they won't have to play the cheaters either, so...

In the article I posted above it shows the significant drop in strikeouts from 2016 to 2017. They went from nearly the most in strikeouts in the AL in 2016 (14th out of 15) to the least, and ranked 1st, 2nd, and 1st in the three years they supposedly cheated. A lot easier to strike out when you don't know what pitch is coming.
