Angels opt out of stadium lease in Anaheim

Interesting LA Times article on the relationship of Disney and the city.

http://www.latimes.com/projects/la-fi-disney-anaheim-deals/

Indeed, critics of the financing structure argue that it has put Disney’s interests first because a large portion of the company’s annual city tax payments go toward paying off the bonds — tying Anaheim’s hands and limiting its ability to fix pressing problems.

“The area immediately around Disneyland is beautiful, but you go a few blocks in any direction and the streets are run-down, the sidewalks are cracked and broken,” said Jeanine Robbins, an Anaheim resident and activist.

I know there are a lot of intrinsic values for the city of Anaheim to have Disney and the Angels in their backyard.  And the politicians seem to make out well.  And, on this board, we have read about the magic goggles that the city firefighters have to find residents in a fire.  And there must be tons of OT for Anaheim cops with Angels games.

For the actual citizens of the city itself?  I haven't been persuaded that their life isn't any better living in Anaheim than Cypress or Stanton.

What’s with that picture? I feel like we’re in the 90’s and I’m looking at it on Netscape Navigator.

As someone who lived in Colorado Springs in the 90s, I think the picture is from then.

The only way I'd be able to tell is if I could zoom in on the Antlers Hotel (in the center directly beneath the summit of Pikes Peak) to see if it says Doubletree or not.

Over the weekend I was in Vegas. Heard rumors that  the city wants to level the Rio and Palms Casino’s and build a stadium for a major league team. Also heard that the A’s are interested in moving there.

The A's should go there.  Raiders and A's in Las Vegas.

Southwest Airlines would love it.

I don't think anybody could argue that Disneyland isn't the most important thing in the history of Orange County. What I I'm trying to figure out is how Disneyland and the angels specifically help the city of Anaheim.

Stanton does not have a Disneyland type entity. Cypress does not have an angels type entity. Superficially, I see no difference between a Stanton , a Cypress, or an Anaheim.

Is the city of Anaheim, or their citizens better off for having these entities? Are there better parks, lower taxes? Do the Anaheim High School athletic teams play in a first class city funded football stadium, or basketball arena, or Aquatic Center?

I am wondering what tangible benefits the pro sports teams and Disneyland provide to the city or its citizens.

My knowledge is more from an economics and jobs standpoint. I'll admit I know less about the schools. Both entities provide a significant amount of jobs to citizens of Anaheim (and other cities) which in itself is a tremendous benefit to having the team. Let's say they left and went to LA, that would leave a lot of people without jobs unless they commuted. This would in turn leave less people spending money on other services within Anaheim which would continue to snowball into other problems. The trickle down effect they both have is massive. Now if they went to another city close by, the impact would be significantly less and many of the same benefits would still exist for Anaheim.

At the same time if Moreno tried to get the city to finance the new stadium, you could argue that the citizens of Anaheim are better off if the team leaves. This has been a bit of hot topic lately and a lot of research coming out shows that the city is almost always better off not helping pay for new sports infrastructure. Mainly because of the trend for teams to move around more than ever before, which leaves a city like Oakland paying for the coliseum another 20+ years after they leave next year.

if you need directions, Taylor can give you the page number in the Thomas Bros Guide

used to love the thomas bros. guide.

one of the guys i sing with has a tough time trusting the GPS on his phone, so before we go on a driving trip to sing, he'll stop by AAA to get as many maps of the area as he can (not a bad idea, really) and map out directions and locations of concerts and hotels. we've taken to calling him "thomas" because of it.

i think you could say this about a lot of stadiums.

i went to a white sox game with @calscuf this summer. beautiful ballpark located right in the middle of big gigantic craphole of a neighborhood. not an area where i'd want to take a leisurely stroll.
