The Official MLB Managers make stupid decisions thread

Yes Mike Scioscia has and will make dumb moves re: the bullpen, lineups, defensive alignments, ROC, etc., but so do many other managers.

Let's start this brand new thread off with a classic from the Phillies new manager Gabe Kapler from last night's opener.

Last night Gabe Kapler, the poster boy for the saber/analytics managers pulled Aaron Nola after only 68 pitchers of pure dealing because --- the data says he struggles the third time through the lineup -- his pen proceeded to blow up the game in fantastic fashion...

Gabe Kapler is quickly becoming a legendary manager..    His game one decision to pull Nola after 68 pitchers where he was completely cruising blew up in his face badly -- then he one upped it last night.

Dude went to the mound and motioned to the pen for a lefty....   thus forcing the pitching change, problem is.. he didn't have a lefty up.  Long story short he had to buy his guy some time, so he starts stalling.  This of course brings into play all the new pace of play rules and such, but given everyone and their brother knew he had screwed either due to pity or whatever... the umps sort of let the situation go on.   Finally the guy gets in and much to the amazement of the opposing manager (again, because of the new pace of play rules), he's allowed to start throwing his 8 warm up pitches...  This causes the Braves manager to lose his shit, dude gets himself ejected ... LOL..  the only thing that would have made it funnier would have been Benny Hilly music playing in the background.

Anyway -- three games into the season.  Kapler has already had to use a position player as a pitcher and has used 21 pitchers in three games including 9 the previous night in an 11 inning game...  NINE...

When you're three games into the season and there is already talk about the team's bullpen being depleted .. LOL...  it's gonna get hilarious in Philly. This Eskin guy is has total wood for him already

The #phillies manager @gabekapler had to use a position player to pitch, and it’s only 3rd game of the season. 21 pitchers in 3 games. Since Kapler wants Phils to play multiple positions maybe everyone should learn how to pitch since he already has worn out his bullpen. #itsajoke

Shall we forget yesterday when Joyce was easily thrown out at the plate on the contact play and killed what could have been a productive 1st inning by the A's? There were no outs and was sent with a hit directly at Pujols. Melvin has had 3 last place finishes in a row. Isn't it about time he was sent packing?

Heyyy... Who's side are you on?

The pussification of MLB.

I would like to see the effectiveness of your everyday starter a third time through the line up 20-30 years ago.  I am not talking about the Ryans or the Seavers.  This isn’t about pussification, it is about winning a game by putting a more effective pitcher in the game.

Richards' meltdown was on his third time through the order, as was Shoemaker's hiccup yesterday. Unfortunately if you start pulling pitchers before they get through the order a third time they'll rarely last beyond 5 innings

Some of that was likely fatigue...  First start and all that.

So many mistakes by @gabekapler. Managers can only lose games in a season. And he lost this one with a brutal, pathetic and disgraceful job of managing. Had 5-0 lead against stinkin #braves and wanted to show people how smart he is and bleeped it up. And takes Hoskins out to boot

According to Kapler, it was a "miscommunication between the dugout and the bullpen."

The worst part of this situation is his response.  Whether he was completely at fault or not, simply stating "I alone own the problem" would have been a better conclusion.  This could be an ugly season in Philadelphia.

Shouldn't see Sosh's name in this thread all season. He's the most forward thinking manager in the game which is why he's been at this for so long. You gotta adapt and change with the times and nobody has done so better than Sosh

Just look at this season. Dude's using a 6-man rotation and is utilizing a 2-way player. Not to mention his bullpen management where he's playing it by match-ups and isn't forcing guys into certain roles

The A's must have committed a couple dozen fielding errors in the four game set. Box score may not have shown them but it was keystone cops in both the outfield and infield. It was the like they had a bad game, the entire series was bad.

Joyce, the dumbass that keeps on giving and the A's third base coach that didn't kick his ass down the line on the passed ball in the 9th is just another sign that Melvin and his crew are just plain bad.

That ball went all the way to the backstop and Joyce was half way down the line and turned back. Maldonado wasn't even running after it because he knew Pujols could have taken home and yet Joyce gave up on it. Is the third base coach mute? He should have been pissed as hell after the play was done but nothing and the look into the A's dugout and you would have thought Melvin was watching a chess match.
