Pete Rose would later say about that steal that it was the dumbest play he'd ever seen, "except that it worked.” 

The Phillies pitcher, Art Mahaffey, was so startled by it that he threw the ball to the backstop. The Reds were also in the pennant hunt, so it was an important game for them too. 

 

Two more notes about Ruiz: 

He would have only two more stolen bases in the next two seasons with the Reds.

He is also the only player ever to pinch-hit for Johnny Bench (in Bench's rookie year).

That was an interesting game. Final score was 1-0, but Wes Covington led off the bottom of the 9th with a double, advanced to third on a one out grounder by Dalrymple, followed by a Tony Taylor walk. So the Phillies had first and third with two out in the bottom of the ninth before Ruben Amaro struck out. So, if someone delivers in that 9th inning, the Phillies' fate could have been very different in that season.
