No, Bob Meusel was batting. For some reason Gehrig was not hitting cleanup. He was waiting on deck. 

 

Meusel hit .315 that year for the Yankees with 12 HR and 78 RBI, and his 138 RBI's the previous year led the league.

 

Ruth never could explain why he decided to steal. It wasn't a close play at all.
