Jonathan Mayo saying he thought Williams was more of a 2017 name, but it sounded like he could possibly have ended up being an easy first round pick with his skillset. If they sign Thaiss, Marsh, and Williams, I'd consider this is a pretty dope draft. Could also be some of the reasoning to overdraft Thaiss? Save money for the guys with sign-ability concerns/commitments (Marsh and Williams)

Yes, that's what I indicated a few hours ago, before the Williams pick.

there were only 4 high school players drafted in rounds 7-10.  I am sure that is common although i don't think I ever noticed it before.  gonna have to check that out.

Probably more common since the hard slotting system. The slot values are low enough that it's worth it for the kids to go to college and getting an education and trying to improve their stock. Most of the teams figure to have used up what they save by signing guys under slot in early rounds before they get to the 7th round so they can't overpay to entice those kids to skip college.

Brandon Wood had a long swing ...

http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/profile.asp?P=troy-montgomery   Did Brandon Wood ever walk 50 times to 41 Ks?   This Montgomery kid walked 50 times in 236 at bats...    In his college career he walked 100 times .vs 88 Ks....    So, very much not Brandon Wood.

how the hell did a guy with three 60+ tools and power fall to the 8th round?

BTW, Troy Montgomery sounds like someone you'd play polo with

He's also another guy with a k/bb ratio of less than 1

He's a midget ....  5'8".   They don't like them small.

He's also tiny. How many college pitchers can locate their pitches well enough to consistently strike out a dude who is 5'8" standing straight up? Imagine what his height is when he's crouched.

I'm not saying this to knock him, or say he won't pan out, just don't get too excited over his walk rate. I also probably have no idea what I'm talking about, so take anything I say with a grain of salt because I'm probably wrong.

I missed this whole thread. Anyone want to give me a brief synopsis, did we do better this year than last (at least potential wise)

I think we got better talent overall this year @ten ocho recon scout

Our 2nd-4th picks are particularly interesting to me and some of the others and I think we pulled out some talent after that as well.

So I can say with absolute certainty that I have absolutely no idea.

We got some guys with upside in the first 6 rounds.  I feel like there are some very interesting picks.  Marsh and Williams are raw high schoolers.  Williams in particular has off the chart tools.  Our college picks aren't just high floor guys like we targeted the last few years.   Two college seniors in the 9th and 10th were probably to save some pool money for some higher risk guys to follow on day 3.  Otherwise, it was HS and college JR's.

Last year, we got some pretty interesting guys in the first 8 rounds outside of Ward.  Jones, Grayson Long, Sanger and Foster all have some upside.

It was day three that has left me bored to tears the last few years.   So I hope we target some real boom or bust guys for 11-40.

Overall though, way more potential from this year's class so far but we've seen how that can turn out as evident by 2009 followed up by 2010.

Interesting that they drafted a couple college seniors in their top 10 picks.  Those guys have no leverage, so they'll sign for super cheap, which allows the team to give more to some of the others. Obviously they're gonna use that savings to try and sign some of the HS guys (I have no idea if any of them are tough signs).
