ESPN: Angels Wasting the Best Years of Mike Trout

Recommended Posts

I would have liked to have brought on Upton at the deal he got.  Cespedes I honestly could care less that we didn't get him.  I think he's a massively overrated player.  He opts out next year and we'd have to pay him more or we have the exact same problem again.  No thanks.  If he doesn't opt out then we're just stuck with a player getting paid 20+ million who just had a bad 1st year of his contract.  The position they find themselves in is disappointing, but I don't think that throwing copious amounts of money at the problem is necessarily the best path to correcting it.  If there is some kind of road map to the 2018 FA class, using this year and next to strengthen the depth of organization.  I can see that as potentially being a plan that works out.  If they wont spend in 2018, i'll start to get upset.  I'm trying to be patient here, but the points are fair.  The Angels while not being bad, have mostly not been real good for a while.

The Angels are in a nice position right now. They are talented, have depth, some payroll flexibility, and alot of money coming off after this upcoming season. I expect more activity at the trade deadline as Eppler gets a better feel for his team. His patience will be rewarded.

the starting pitchers are possibly talented.  The fielders....well 3 of them are pretty good.  Otherwise its pretty bad.  Be careful what u wish for as far trades.  The only significant moves we can make at the deadline mean we are trading 25 man roster players, which means we're probably selling.  Our best hope for adding to improve the team this year is a trade of one of the starters between now and the start of the season.  Hopefully Eppler can swing something.  Its starting to seem like thats not gonna happen either.

The Angels have payroll flexibility?

"But the Angels look like a third- or fourth-place team and it's likely another October without Trout's wonderful gifts on national display."

Trout's gifts weren't on display in the 2014 playoffs as well.

Sick burn! Way to lay it on the kid for choking in his first-ever playoff appearance.

Trout is 24 which also happens to be the age of the average rookie. Aren't a MLB players best years typically 25-30 or so?

Aren't there a lot of big contracts coming off the books soon?

Wasn't Trout's August a big reason the Angels didn't win 2 more games?

Let's see what happens this season and go from there.
