I like both guys even though on here your normal choices are, like Scioscia hate Jerry, like Jerry hate Scioscia, or hate them all including Arte. Dipoto gets shit on on here mostly by guys that are sick of the praise he gets at the expense of Scioscia, it is also praise that he hasn't really earned. People on here can talk about Mike's poor track record the last 6 years or so, that doesn't mean Jerry has been successful, especially if you used the same barometer to measure success.

You guys are missing the point. Jerry went into the club house with his "nerd stat boner". Scioscia, Butcher, and Pujols ran him out on a rail and the team when on a hot streak. Obviously you can't bounce the GM every time you need some mojo, so they hire a couple of expendable math dorks and whenever things are looking flat on the field they invite them in to give a PowerPoint on FIP and defensive WAR and blow spit balls at them, give them swirlies, and chase them out of the clubhouse. They feel invigorated having pummeled some pencil-necked geeks and take it to the field.

It's the "ostrich maneuver", classic Scioscia.

Personally, I believe that Scioscia relies on stats more than most managers in the game ... to the point that sometimes it's counter productive. I think most of your analytical stats are just fluff ... no real meat on the bone.

I'd be curious as to how you arrived at that conclusion. I'm going with the 'I don't understand this so it's not important' line of thinking that you seem to employ so often.

Quick one of you smart guys put together both of their resumes leaving out opinion, just fact. So for 2014 it would look like this:

Scioscia led team to a 98 win season

Dipoto assembled team that won 98 games.

This year would have been harder it would be something like this:

Scioscia managed team to within 2 games of the playoffs despite having below average production from offensive and pitching

Jerry built a team that played above expectations until his untimely resignation

Hell if you wrote the most glowing record of both men it would be VERY difficult to look at Dipoto as being more successful than Mike.

This thread should be in the spin forum.  About as much will be accomplished.

Regardless, other than maybe 10 posters, aw posters are not black and white when it comes to Dipoto/Sosh.  Most can see good and bad in both while liking one or the other more.

Its the few posters who refuse to yield and inch that bring the entertainment.

Yet the issue was communication of the stats. Dipoto crossed a line and lost the respect of the clubhouse. It sucks because I like the guy, but it is what it is.

Yes they are creating these positions and paying people money to ignore the actual information they will be providing.

By Scioscia's own admission, he manages by feel. A GM who makes decisions largely based upon statistical information just resigned in frustration because the information that he generated was not used by the field staff. Tell me what else I am supposed to conclude, given that we have the same manager, and it is apparent from the Dipoto situation that the owner will side with him in any disagreement.

Can't we just all agree that EVERY manager manages by feel and EVERY manager uses stats.

Also, the issue was the communication of information and how it was going to get down to the players. They resolved that by getting them the information to their phones and ipads but because of how Dipoto handled it he felt he had to resign because he lost the clubhouse.

Seems like a waste of time to hire someone whose work will be ignored.

several years ago someone had a quote they made up from sosh that was talking about figgins, and it was something like "speedy guy goes first, pass the pie." as if it was part of a question from a reporter on why figgins was batting leadoff. your response made me think of that for some reason.
