Hamilton won the homerun derby in 2010.

how did all that power work out for us?

He lost a ton of weight in an effort to be more athletic and it sapped his power.

Last checked, Howard is still a big dude.

it's not all about power, chuck.

CJ Cron probably has the best raw power on the team, how do his power numbers look this season?  Vernon smells was reportedly a batting practice hall of famer during his time with angels, and dude barely hit his weight.  Even with his weight loss, Hamilton had plenty of power and still had ZERO homeruns at the big A last year.

Just because a dude can hit a baseball far, that doesn't mean he's a valuable hitter.   If he can't make contact, he's not gonna produce, period.  Especially at the big A

Ryan Howard

Away

2012 - .696

2013 - .619

2014 - .668

And you can get that sort of amazing production over the rock bottom price of 60 mil guaranteed over the next two season (including 2017 buyout).  Those of you expecting him to do well outside of that park, specifically in Anaheim need to revisit the Josh Hamilton experiment.

I don't think anyone actually suggested that trading for Howard would be a good idea. Just that taking him and say 40% of his salary over the next 3 years could possibly lower the asking price for Revere.

For example: Say the Phillies want Bedrosian, Bandy, and Ellis for Revere. Dipoto says no to Ellis. Counters with Nate Smith and a couple lower level prospects and says to add Howard into the deal as well. Agrees to take on 40% of the salary, freeing up 14 million over the next two years for the Phillies, as well as the almost guaranteed 10m team buyout.

Not saying that's a good idea either, especially that particular package of prospects but I'm just using that as an example of what could happen.

Any package of any of those players for Revere would make me so very sad.  If you put paying Howard on top of that........ay dios mio.

If the Phillies are giving Howard away and taking on over 60% of his contract, then sure, bring him in and platoon him at DH with Cron.

But that won't happen. Amaro, the Phillies GM is notoriously stubborn. He refuses to make many deals, basically won't pull the trigger on any trade unless it's a huge overpay. Other GM's just wait him out. Look what's happened to the Phillies because if his unwillingness to gamble in trades. He's stuck with an old, expensive, last place team with crap for prospects, basically the wrist position you can be in.

He traded Rollins

He got the right deal for Rollins, but managed to keep Lee, Hamels, Howard and Utely even though they probably all should've been dealt 2 years ago. If they were, the orosoects and players they would've got in return would've been improved enough by now that they'd have a chance at competing and could even be aggressive in free agency.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis was just DFA'd by the Mets. He is a left-handed bat with power. He is capable of decent walk rates but strikes out a lot. He only had 40 PA's this season with a horrible BABIP driving his slash line down into oblivion. It couldn't hurt to make a minor trade for him and test him out in LF (against RHP only) where his defense has been good. If we get closer to the deadline and he isn't working out trade for a different LF. Alternatively he could be a platoon DH option that definitely wouldn't break the bank.He seems like a guy you could take a flyer on but the Angels may not like his splits issues.

Guess they were listening?
