No national holidays are supposed to be for real events like the 4th of july and presidents day.  How dare you insult other holidays by claiming this.

It is the national pastime.   Make all 30 teams play on the same first day. 

No more opening the season in another country.  Leave that stuff for the WBC and exhibition games!

It kind of is already in California which celebrates Cesar Chavez Day each year on March 30th or so - it's been an official California holiday for a number of years now and each year it seems to fall on the Opening Day of baseball..........

If baseball were to get opening day to become a holiday, then football, basketball, hockey, and every other sport you can think of will demand their opening day to also become holidays. I can hear them claiming discrimination already.

Official as in state workers get it off? I've never known or heard of anyone getting that day off and we never had it off from school to my recollection but I graduated before budget cuts, furloughs and days being cut.
