Marriage shouldn't be recognized by the state anyway...it's a religios Institution...not a state institution.

It's just another way for the Government to tax us.

Oh well.  At last we can say goodbye to this Clinton era law.

I don't think it's a cop out. I think this issue has just led people to think about the entire institution.

I heard some dude on the news this morning, while waiting for the decision, say "there are 10's of thousands of people who are just waiting to make commitments to each other and express their love formally." Bullcrap. You don't need an institution's approval to do that. They want more $. I don't blame them.

The argument for equality is disingenuous at best. If the argument were "either end benefits to married couples or give the same benefits to same-sex couples" it would be a much less divisive conversation. Instead, we choose to  draw lines in the sand, pit one group against another, further hate, anger and close-mindedness.

Saying "I don't think the government should have any say in marriage" is a cop out.  They do, because with marriage comes certain benefits that non-married people don't get, and those benefits come from the government.  It's a way to avoid discussing the issue.

BS. We shouldn't have to ask permission from the government to get married. If we want to ruin our lives we should have that right without the government having a say. There are plenty of contractual agreements that can be entered into that the government can then apply their benefits to that don't first require their explicit permission.

Perhaps my wording didn't make my point clear; let me try to clarify. Government IS in marraige right now and I do understand arguments for and against that. To me that's a different issue than marriage equality. Since the government is involved with marriage, I think there shouldn't be any discrimination, in the form of saying certain people can't get married (and please, no ridiculous slippery-slope arguments about marrying kids or dogs or furniture). Now, if you want to argue separately about government being involved in marriage I'm OK with that. To me they are different issues.

We are not all pragmatists

That's the whole point Tin. I don't think there should be any benefits for people who are married and I don't think those that aren't married should be penalized. The federal government needs to stay the hell away from our personal lives.
