Fair enough, but I think Ohtani actually is a better example if we are just isolating GM skill. When everyone had basically the same set budget Eppler won. He pulled out all the stops and got Ohtani. Maybe it's been the budget that has stopped him with the traditional big money FAs.

Right now, I think he has done a good job. HE rebuilt the minor leagues in two years but he does need to put things together now while Trout is young.

I agree he was a huge huge coup and his not having the budget to really chase before this year was my line of thinking as well.  

Hes never been in a situation where Arte said, go ahead and run the table...  I also meant it when I said that people will want to sing his praises if he signs Cole, but it will be Arte that allowed it to happen.

It's Arte's off-season IMO...

I appreciate what you’re trying to do here but a spicy tuna role is basically a California roll tier type of sushi.  It can be pretty yummy but it’s pretty standard fare.  Cole is more like blue fin fatty tuna.  The expensive shit they run out of.

And pretty much anytime you're talking about a big money FA -- it's never really more than 5 teams in consideration.   Trout will still be bait..   Basically, it's the same thing -- not sure why you want to downplay it so hard.
