Oakland grants A's site for potential new stadium

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland Athletics have gotten to first base in their quest for a new stadium.

The city's port commission on Monday took a first step in providing land at Howard Terminal, where the A's hope to build a 35,000-seat stadium as part of a housing and retail development. Commissioners tentatively agreed to give the team four years to complete an environmental impact report for the 50-acre site.

The current Oakland Coliseum is more than 50 years old.

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf supported the commission's decision.

The A's have a long way to go before they can get their stadium, including negotiating a lease or sale of the land and receiving city council and state approval.

Opponents say the development would add traffic and disrupt port operations.

4 years for an environmental impact report? My God they will never get a new stadium at the rate...

Ugh, that's embarrassing.

Looking at the steel mill next door, I bet the environmental impact studies and site remediation means almost 10 years to build and open it.

I mean, it's Oakland - just move the team to Portland or Nashville already ...

I feel like I've read this same article multiple times in recent years.   Seriously, what is this.. the 5th or so different site?

No kidding.

Then again... that fan base probably doesn't deserve a new stadium.  They're fine in the cesspool that they play in now.  It fits. What's it called Hazmat Stadium?

Gonna be hard to top the Redskins' surfing-moat-rock climbing experience.

that's still about a million times better than where they play now.

certainly not the worst idea ever floated for a new park.

In a move that throws a curveball at the Oakland A’s, the city of Oakland has sued Alameda County to block the county from selling its ownership in the 155-acre Coliseum arena site to the baseball team, which hopes to develop that land to help fund a new waterfront ballpark.

It states that if the sale goes through, any plans to develop the space into affordable housing is “extinguished.”

How can you tell politicians are lying? There is no fucking way waterfront property is being developed for affordable housing. This is big developer money talking not some consumer protection group.

Dunno  - some counties around here, there's some serious graft to be made building affordable complexes via "non-profits" - with taxpayers left holding the bag to fund the acquisition, development, and infrastructure build-out, as well as rental subsidies from now until the end of time, while the non-profits and their development partners skim all day, every day.

Throw in some kick-backs and lots of non-comp set-asides, a lot of people get personally wealthy, while using other people's money - but no worries, it's all in a "good cause."
