You don’t know Ausmus puts a premium on defense in the same way that Scioscia did. What if Ward kills it with the bat and Fletcher struggles in ST? Then what do you do? What if both look good and LaStella looks bad? 

Yes he’s a work in progress at 3rd, but he’s not Trumbo bad at 3rd. He’s basically Valbuena or Marte at 3rd, slightly less than Cozart. And that’s now after learning a new position after ST on the fly. I think he’ll be fine.

And Bour’s defense isn’t poor. It’s not as good at Pujols, and he doesn’t have versatility like I was hoping for from this spot. But he’s serviceable at 1st. He’s not a gold glove first baseman but he’s ok.

Fair concern.  But it is also reasonable to be concerned about Pujols defense going forward.  He is getting into "just old" territory and he is about as mobile as Michael Moore in a hammock.

So the Angels might have actually gotten better defensively in 2019 with more games of Bour over Pujols.

Once he was non-tendered, his free agency began. He doesn't go back to being under control for 6 years.

You're thinking of situations like Cespedes and Puig. They begin their careers with mulityear deals that are less than 6 years, so they remain under control when the contract ends.

You're thinking of situations like Cespedes and Puig. They begin their careers with mulityear deals that are less than 6 years, so they remain under control when the contract ends. 

Should a non-tendered player sign with a new team, that team secures control of his remaining arbitration seasons until free agency. For example, Turner has four-plus years of Major League service time after his excellent 2014, meaning he still needs two more years of service to qualify for free agency.

His range isn’t great but the fielding percentage is ok. He also has no versatility. He should be roughly the same as other 1B we’ve had in recent years who aren’t Albert Pujols who still could win a GG at 1st if he played enough. (Or if he doesn’t as evidenced by Rafael Palmiero’s infamous win over Erstad).
