I understand that. But Barria had thrown what...83 pitches? Would it have been that dangerous to have him complete the inning (or to pull him if someone else reached)? Instead, you bring in a rookie to throw some pretty high-stress pitches AND burn a bench player in the process.

1. 90 pitches

2. Barria is a rookie, too

Yes, they had a good lead and why not save his arm?  This is a rookie pitcher.  I'll be the first to criticize Sosh for stuff I think is dumb.  This just isn't one of them.  It just seems super nit-picky to me.

89 pitches. They were going to pinch hit for him if he completed the inning or not.

3 straight Ks starting with runners at first and third no out. Alvarez digs out of his own jam.

Sort of the MLB-wide story of the season. Strikeouts are on a record pace.

The 4 teams in the AL that have struck out the most hitters are the 4 teams with the best records. And, yeah, the Angels are one of them!

I’m well aware of that. So why not just pinch hit for him in the next inning instead of double switching mid-inning.

That’s actually why I thought Barria should have been given the opportunity to finish the inning.

I think giving Barria the early hook is an example of what could be a cumulative effect in the bullpen. We saw what happened the other night when Scioscua went to the well one too many times with Anderson. There’s only so many shuttles we can utilize between Anaheim and Salt Lake. Keep pulling the starters too early and the bullpen becomes overworked. So it worked out this once. This is not a case of “the ends justify the means”. Over time, it could lead to a huge problem.

I don't necessarily disagree with you...though I think we have to keep in mind that the Angels have a helluva lot of pitchers coming off arms injuries...and in the case of Barria this is a guy who hasn't thrown over 140 innings in a season, is 21, and is probably going to go well over his career highs in innings pitched.

To keep his pitch count down because (insert red's quote here)

My honest guess would be in this new era of baseball, we are moving away from the golden standard of 100 pitches in a game, because more and more SPs are getting hurt.  Yes, you are correct, Barria has not suffered a significant injury in the past.  However, he's young and he's pitching in a very tough environment today.

A lot of prospects these days throw 75-80 pitches in a game, then get pulled.  This is the overall trend I am noticing.

This makes sense.  My only concern is what's been brought up.  We are burning the bullpen and we dont have the flexibility to shuffle bullpen arms up and back from Salt Lake.   I guess the season will tell if it pays off.

This is also an excellent point and something we need to watch for.  They need to be less reliant on Anderson, Middleton, Alvarez to save us right now.  This is where our current roster construction of having mainly relievers WITHOUT options harms us.  We need to be able to option guys back and forth, give breaks, etc...

That said, let's take things a game at a time.  Anderson has been off for a few days in a row, then came in and pitched today. Who knows what tomorrow may bring?  We may get blown out and not need him, we may blow them out and not need him, our SP could pitch 7+ innings, etc...
