Driverless Car Kills Pedestrian

Recommended Posts

It was just a matter of time. Would an actual driver had made the same mistake, no one knows. But it is a very cold world where all you can blame is technology designed to remove people from the expense ledger.

This incident will slow Uber but you know the rest of the tech world is not going to stop moving forward. Too much profit on the line and too much control.

At this stage of testing I would think none would be able to look at risk tables and be able to create a binding agreement.

And this is testing by putting these vehicles onto the streets completely without a human backup to intervene to prevent an accident. Zero failsafe on theoretical testing in an uncontrolled environment. Insanity.

isolated incidents like this happened when people first started driving automobiles around a hundred years ago

people overreacted and wanted to ban automobiles over those isolated incidents, but pedestrians adapted, and now that technology is ubiquitous

Curious, how is a pedestrian going to know if the car is being driven automatically?

They couldn't.

I think there's going to need to be some serious discussion about pedestrian right of way laws and all of that with driverless cars.

But driverless cars are going to be a reality, I think.  I can't wait.  No stoplights.  No traffic jams.

How do you figure?

Cars will tell the computer system managing traffic the route that everybody is taking, and adjust the speed of all other cars. No need to even have stoplights anymore.

That's the utopian version, anyway.  There's always a dystopian version, though, lol. (see last link)
