fyi -- I looked it up -- Nomo had 123 MLB pitching wins.

he also threw no-hitters for the both the dodgers and red sox. can only think of ryan and bunning as the other pitchers to have thrown no-nos in both leagues.

If Ohtani was a ceiling 1 WAR hitter and 1 WAR pitcher (I don’t think that, just for arguments sake), do they still let an average pitcher and average hitter do both?

Ohtani's ceiling as a hitter probably isn't higher than 1. As a pitcher I believe it is quite high... 6-7.

Holy friggin over reaction, Batman....

Ohtani is a rookie making the league minimum.........all I see is butt-hurt from giddy butt-hurt team scouts who, all of a sudden, seemed to have changed their collective minds about Ohtani based on a very small sample size.

Because of all of the hype, Ohtani will simply need to make adjustments earlier than other rookies.

Not worried one bit about Ohtani.  I am more worried about the bullpen......and maybe the starting pitching.....possibly the impact of Simmons's shoulder strain.....a little about Pujols reverting back to a pull hitter.....the economy.....my rash....an annoying oily discharge.

Well if Jeff Fletcher says Ohtani is likely to get the start in the Season opening series in Oakland, then I guess Ohtani is a lock to be on the 25 man roster and in the rotation.

For the Oakland A's franchise sake, I hope Ohtani does NOT start the opening game for which there will be good attendance. Typically, opening day is about the only 'good attendance' game the A's can count on...........so if Ohtani starts game 2, 3 or 4 instead, then the normal 14,000 crowd (the old Chick Hearn quote used many times here before -- "if there's 20,000 fans here tonight as reported, then more than half of them came dressed up as empty seats.......") will swell to more than 30,000 -- perhaps more for Ohtaini's first MLB start.

I'd expand the press box and put some of the non-local national MLB writers up in the AL DAVIS seat section in center field and save the better press seats for the large contingent of Japanese media.

I would not at all be surprised if he doesn't start on the mound in the season-opening 4-game series in Oakland...Fletcher

I take that to me mean he would be surprised to see Ohtani on the mound in the 4 game series in Oakland.

How can you know that of any 23 year old, let alone one who has just two weeks of inconsistent At-Bats in Spring Training?

I actually think he's going to be a elite hitter, and an above average starter. Maybe not in 2018. Yet by 2019, he'll be an All-Star on both sides of the diamond.

Well, consider only four DH's had more than 1 war last year, and of those four two played significant time in the field, and the other two had over 600 PAs.

As a DH, with 250 PAs he'd have to keep around a 130 wRC+ to finish around 1 war.

For him to have more upside as a hitter he will need to either give up pitching or move to the national league.

Guy just does not look ready. Lots hype but rather him start in SLC and get acclimated to the states

agree, but will he? Not sure. he's going to need lots of swings. Way behind on hitting. His pitching will come around after a few starts and he'll be fine.

Let's not panic just yet.  Recall three years ago, when Ohtani was embarrassing MLB hitters in the WBC.  ST is the best and only time for ML pitchers to work on different things without risk.  Come opening day, he'll be just fine.  Not Cy Young fine, but at least good enough to be a passable #3 -- which is all they need from him from the get-go.  And he will get better in time, versus major league hitting, not AAA scrubs.

You can make it sound as bleeding heart as you want, they're not going to start him anywhere but the big time.

Which doesn't discount the possibility that he may suck bigtime, up here.

A DH who sucked. Didn't we  have one of those last year?

i'd rather see him suck down there and work it out where it wont cost the Angels up here. We are not a shoo-in for a WC spot.

We lived with suckdom in LF for three years and didnt make the playoffs. It sucks to have a DH who sucks, even more. Been there, done that.

I think he'll make the opening roster on his pitching merits. The bar isn't that high on the Angel's starting staff.
