Tough Decision Time on Ohtani ?

2006–2007

He made his MLB debut on May 27, 2006, starting against the Baltimore Orioles. He pitched seven shutout innings, striking out five, and earned the victory. This was followed with three more consecutive victories. Despite his success, when Bartolo Colón returned from the disabled list, Weaver was bumped out of the rotation and sent back down to the minors.

**********************

He sent him down because Colon was coming off the DL. Weaver won his first 4 starts in impressive style. He didn't need anymore seasoning.

I think the original post was sarcasm towards Scioscia spin on why they sent down Jared when his brother Jeff stayed in the rotation despite being ineffective.

Sosh said Jared needed more seasoning.

Lol kudos to salty ass Jeff Passan for 1. Jumping to all those conclusions based on 11 at bats in spring training after not playing baseball for over a year and 2. Finding a scout dumb enough to say you can’t learn in the majors. (Apparently everyone has to be fully developed before being put in the majors).. why does Jeff Passan hate the Angels so much?

No chance Ohtani isn't on the opening day roster. The bigger decision is when they finally scrap the hitting charade for good because he just doesn't have the upside on that end to justify the reps needed there when he can focus on pitching...where he does actually have immense potential

Are these scouts who say he can't hit named?

So here is how this game is played.  A guy like Jeff Passan says stuff like this so he gets attention, then keeps the attention by talking about his insider knowledge of concerns in the swing, then if he makes it he reports his insider knowledge about how hard Ohtani worked in private to overcome these issues.

Jeff Passan gets to be a know it all and an insider no matter what happens.

I call bullshit.

Thomas Lott is the author.  From his twitter page 'Still wondering if I'm in a dream or did the Astros win the WS?'.

He might end up right, but these scouts have literally seen 10 plate appearances.

Let's back out a minute and think about how hard it is to scout and how often guys are right after seeing a player all of twice.

This also assumes that Ohtani never makes an adjustment or improves his swing mechanics or just gets better because of repetition.  Or that he's a tremendous baseball player who works hard and has adjusted pretty easily to other stuff in his baseball career.  Like that splitter.

So maybe he becomes Joey Gallo at the plate.

He's not Mike Trout, but remember when the high fastball was going to be his downfall?

Talented players make adjustments.  He's 23.

Scouts may have seen only 14 plate appearances from Ohtani but they have a catalogue of millions of swings spread over thousands of players to draw comparisons to. If they are saying what they have seen comps with players not ready for MLB major league play the butt hurt is coming from you guys.

Ohtani looks over matched right now, two weeks into play. So do many other players that we know have MLB skills. I think the difference is the other players know where they need to be to hit at this level, Ohtani knows where he needs to be to hit in Japan. There is a gap he will need to fill in.

East coast butthurt Yahoo writer who’s probably a Yankees fan. Come on, the kid is 23 and a gazillion miles away from home trying to adjust to a new culture and he’s only two weeks in. I think these people need to chill and let this kid get acclimated with his new team, league and surroundings.

From everything I’ve read about Shohei Ohtani (a lot, like most of you guys I’m sure)  I get the sense that doubters will fuel this guy.  Let the hate flow.  Fuck you Jeff Passan. What is this now ? 3 or 4 downer articles on Ohtani in 3 months.  A guy that’s had all of like 15 spring training AB’s after hardly playing for a year.  Some hard hitting beisbol coverage.

Teams had 25 chances to draft Mike Trout before the Angels drafted him. Where were all the scouts at then.
