Not that many seasons back, I seem to recall that the player traded outbound was named later.to return. Don't know which team sent him back to which other team, but I got a laugh out of it.

There are actually four players in baseball history who were traded for themselves: Harry Chiti, Dickie Noles, Brad Gulden and John McDonald. You may be thinking about McDonald, who was traded to the Tigers by the Blue Jays in July 2005 in a compensation deal. The two sides settled the deal when Detroit sent cash to Toronto. The Jays used the money to buy back McDonald. Come to think of it, that sounds like a Jerry Dipoto deal.

John McDonald — who was once traded for himself — retires

Wasn't Joel Youngblood also one of those that was traded for himself?
