Hosmer to Padres- 8 years

Recommended Posts

Tatis Jr is probably another 2+ years away from the majors. He struggled in AA last year. Plus, what productive hitters have come through their system in the last 20 years? The three best hitters their system produced in that time span (Rizzo, Turner, Gyorko) have all had their success with other teams. That organization is hopeless

On MLBNetwork's top prospect show, the Baseball America writers thought Tatis could be called up by the end of the year.

Hosmer's contract is for $20M/yr for 5 years and then $13M/yr for the last 3 years. That's an AAV of $18M/yr. My question is. Is this way to lower the AAV from $20M/yr to $18M/yr. If Hosmer opts out after 5 yrs, the Padres already had the benefit of the lower AAV, so how is that to be handled.

What's to prevent a contract like that for say Trout. Give Trout 6 yrs at $40m/yr and then 4 years at $10M/yr with an opt out after 6 yrs. Knowing full well he will opt out. So instead of $40M AAV for 6yrs, it is 10yrs at $28M AAV, even though opts out of the last 4 years, the damage had already been done.

So can we at least now stop pretending this year is different, or do we really need to wait for JD and Arrieta?  It’s the same as years past but it started in February instead of December.

How so? I still see more big name FA"s out there than any other off-season in memory and players are already in ST. As for the player's that have already signed, they have all done so for less than what the "experts" thought they would've. Honestly, besides the Marlin's, it doesn't feel like anyone made any major trades this off-season. I mean dipshit Dipoto did make that whole bungled Dee Gordon trade though. This off-season is anything but a typical one and it seem's like it might just get even funkier as time goes by. Let's just hope a few deal's come/fall our way and we can snag a few players on the cheap.

Eh, Hosmer's overrated. A good player but not worth a big contract. He'll end up stealing money from them the same way as what Pujols has done to the Angels.

13 Million the last few years.  Pujols will be making 27 million this year.  Not anywhere near the same ballpark.

The option years aren't included when calculating AAV for CBT purposes

Oh, and Hosmer gets a $5 million signing bonus. So that + 5 years at $20 mil per + 3 years at $13 mil per. $144 million total, AAV $18 mil. Sources.

--------------------------------------------------------

Then explain that Tweet from Scott Miller.

It doesn't mention CBT

Your idea is on the right track, but there are a few flaws. First, you have to convince Trout to take a 10/280 deal. That isn't going to happen. More realistically in your scenario, the numbers would need to be $40 mil for the first 6 seasons, and then $25 mil a year for another 6 seasons. That would be 12/390, which would give an AAV of $32.5. Better than $40, but not a huge difference.

And second, I presume the deal would have to be acceptable to the commissioner. Any deal intended to circumvent the tax threshold might not be allowed. For example, I don't think you could sign trout to a 20 year, $400 mil deal, with $390 of that payable in the first ten years and the remaining $10 mil paid in years 11-20 (when he could just retire and walk away).
