Angels 2017 Draft (& Undrafted) Signings

Recommended Posts

“He’s a really special, young kid off the field as well as everything that he does on the field,” amateur scouting director Matt Swanson told reporters. “It’s amazing. We were holding our breath kind of all along, hoping he was going to get to us, and we were just beyond thrilled that he was there.”

As all of us fans were too.

A couple of things:

1) Let's get him out into Orem to see what he can do as quickly as possible;

2) Let's understand he is 18 years old, and will be competing against many 21+ year old pitchers, so let's have some patience;

3) He's not Chevy Clarke, or any other prospect. He is is his own person. Don't hang monikers on him because others did not succeed or he doesn't live up to your expectations or the supposed hype.

4) It may take him time to adjust to all his new-found wealth and fame, so recognize that, especially since he is 18 years old.

5) I really hope he does well.

Teams lose their bonus allotment for any top 10-round pick they fail to sign. So before they pick a player, teams generally have a good idea of whether he’ll sign. The few exceptions usually revolve around a post-draft medical examination that finds something that leads the team to reduce its offer.

I think this is why they seemed to go a little off reservation with picks 4-10.  They'll probably get all of those guys for under slot and then make some bigger offers to 11-15.

So basically the stories were all true..  The Angels were on him early, made him feel wanted and it paid off.    Thankfully they were lucky nobody mucked it up by picking him.

Props to the front office.

Dodgeball references are aces IMO..
