Source: Astros have designated OF Carlos Gomez for assignment.

 

 

Angels should take a chance here. He's been really bad this year and has been worth 0.3 WAR the last calendar year but he's a guy to buy low on. Angels have obviously been hurting in LF and he's an intriguing option at age 30. He could be brought back for 2017 potentially(free agent this winter).

Wouldn't hurt. I wouldn't trade anything but minor league filler for him, which is about the Astros should expect, but he's produced about the same as our LFs have the last two years and has far more upside. Getting him in this year could give us a boost on resigning him.

if we're not going to spend any money on a LF this offseason, why not give him a look....I've been all for giving Choi and Marte AB's but Gomez at least has some history of sucess in the big.....not since the trade obviously....

Agreed. If our approach to left field is "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" it won't hurt us at all to add Gomez to the list of potential candidates.

I remember when Carlos Gomez was part of the Johan Santana trade & was basicly just a pinch runner in the trade.

He had career years in 2013 & 2014 but then he's gone back to looking more like a pinch runner.

The Angels just dumped Lincecum, in part so he didn't start collecting his bonuses and it will keep them under the luxury tax...don't see them adding someone like Gomez unless it's for the league minimum which means either the Astros eat most of the salary or they wait until he clears waivers.

Funny thing is there were actually fans on this board last year willing to trade the farm to get him.   The Ryan Howard is back threads were fun, as were the trade for Revere threads..

He's a free agent after the season. Trading/claiming him now wouldn't do much good for next season.

This makes me sad. I saw him play in Milwaukee when I went to a game there. I really liked watching him and he was a really really good player. 

He's exactly the type of guy I'd like to see the Angels pursue this off-season. They can probably get him pretty cheap on a one year deal. He might do it because he'll get playing time and a long leash. A one year deal will give him the ability to hit FA and sign a big deal if he plays well. The Angels can offer him a QO and get a draft pick if they lose him or resign him if he works out. If not then it didn't cost them too much and they aren't committed for a long time.

For as bad of a season he's having, his production this year would still be an upgrade in LF.

Gomez is known as a poor clubhouse player though. Not sure I'd want to take that on. Then again, we did with Escobar.

Does anyone feel that our clubhouse is susceptible to a bad clubhouse guy?  Will a guy like Gomez negatively affect Albert or Trout?  I kinda doubt it.  Also, I have heard nothing about Escobar being a bad guy in the clubhouse.  My issue with him is his play on the field and his lackadaisical attitude at times.

There have been some grumblings internally about Escobar. In the past, he was more vocal, which rubbed his teammates the wrong way. For the Angels, he mostly keeps to himself.

He has to clear AL waivers before the NL teams can claim him.  Once he clears he will be a free agent & only costs ML pro-rated minimum which is no cost.

Let's just go for broke: keep Escobar, get Puig and Gomez, lure Guillen out of retirement. Let Mang earn his paycheck and keep all these guys in line.

I can't see Choi ever becoming a decent LFer.

I'd stick Marte out there every game. Time to sink or swim, buddy.

probably get trashed for saying this (perhaps, rightfully so) but I think he's worth a flyer -- of course, I'd wait to see if the Astros really let him go-- and then pounce on him for the MLB minimum -- not sure what his contract is or how many years remain on it -- but this guy was a stellar player just last season and not that long ago........

he's likely better than what we have planned for LF next year.......

so I'd be game to pick him up for us -- I think Houston might just be dangling him to see what interest he draws and will listen to any offers -- not sure if anyone will offer much and instead wait the ten days to see if they can get him really cheap and at Houston's expense..........

I have been under the impression that like waivers, teams can pull players back from the DFA list........
