USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that Matt Kemp is "being made available" by the Padres.

San Diego is apparently looking to sell early on the veteran outfielder, who is off to a nice start this season in the power department with 10 home runs and 29 RBI in 39 games. That has come with a .250 batting average and a .264 on-base percentage and the 31-year-old is still owed a boatload of money, so the Padres can't expect to get a huge haul of prospects in return. Kemp has a weak .302 OBP in 811 plate appearances with the Friars dating back to the beginning of 2015.

Owed $18 million (after Doggie contribution) till 2019.  Pretty much has been a mid .700 ops player the last 3-4 years.  $12-15 million a season?

Kemp and Shields?  Although that's a lot of donuts to be taking on.

id like it if Arte is willing to take on the money.  Give us time to build the farm back up.

The OBP has been very mediocre for Kemp since joining the Pads.

But his power numbers, playing half of his games in Petco Park, are rock solid.

Ambivalent about this one, as while he brings more punch to the team, he also brings the questionable OBP and significant money owed to him through 2019.  This could become Hackilton lite, potentially.

Even though he would likely not be ready until mid to late 2017, I like Blarg's idea of drafting the Vandy OF ranked #22 in the latest draft rankings.   Fill in LF in the meantime.

No thanks.  Even with the Dodgers paying 18M of the 73M owed to him from 2016-2019 he's not worth almost 14M a year.  He's over the age of 30, overpaid and declining.  We've done that dance enough and I can't imagine Arte is interested when he didn't want to spend money on big name FA's last off season..
