NHL Expansion to Vegas - Official

Aside from Tampa, Dallas and perhaps Nashville, hockey has not worked particularly well in the south. The Panthers and the Hurricanes are at the bottom of the league in attendance, and Atlanta has already lost two teams to Canadian cities.

The truly amazing NHL city is Toronto. The Leafs haven't been relevant in decades, and they still draw over 19K per game on average.

It was actually discussed about adding a second team to the Toronto market

I hope Carolina doesn't move because when the team is good, they're a pretty good hockey town. The team has just been so bad for so long... I'd also like the give the Panthers another few years to see if this current team can bring in more fans (they've never had any sustained success). They got a really nice nucleus with Ekblad, Barkov, Huberdeau, and Bjugstad. Exciting times are ahead for the franchise no matter where they are located.

Arizona definitely needs to move though, and if Florida doesn't start to gain real traction soon, they should too.

Bettman says that the league has no timetable, so it may be a while before we find out. Quebec City should also get strong consideration. The way that things have gone, it seems that an expansion team here is all but done.

Saw the outside of the arena weekend before last, and it's coming along well.

Now, about that ballpark for the Athletics...

Quebec getting an expansion would just screw up the divisions royally.  That's why I think the smart play is move a East team (Florida preferably or Carolina since Florida is too stupid) to Quebec.  Then that leaves Seattle in a few years and the divisions would be balanced without a bunch of realignment of the divisions.

And you can have the A's as long as you have a retractable dome, with no artificial turf.

A retractable dome is the only way that baseball works here. I have gone to Cashman Field for a 7:05 game with it 110 at first pitch while sitting on aluminum seats that have baked in the sun all day, and it isn't fun.

They showed the new arena on the Kings broadcast last night. Looks like it'll be a good venue. Said they plan to be finished in April, which got a smirk from our announcers.

High Expansion Fee May Cause Looser Draft Rules

Interesting thoughts in this article.  Vegas, you can have Stoner.

What if they Let them pay a lower fee but their draft picks after having the worst record in the debut season be that they cannot move down via the lottery but can move up...basicly makes it so they get the #1 & #2 picks without any other team moving up ahead of them.

Also give them draft picks the year before they become an expansion team this way they already have a farm system in place.

In the year 2100 what do u think the new teams will be by then ?

I'm guessing by then there is more californian teams, more canadian ones, more mid west teams.

They might stay out of the south....people there only watch College(amateur) sports.

Bettman was on the Ducks broadcast last night.  Heyward specifically asked him about expansion.  Now it sounds like he is hedging towards 2018-2019 and not 2017-2018.

Heyward also asked him about the proliferation of fantasy sports gambling, and if that had an effect on Vegas gambling.  The weird comment he made was that fantasy sports could not affect a game, yet vegas gambling could.  Which IMO is a naive way of looking at it.  IMO, in this day and age, you can buy one persons performance, and it might not affect the teams outcome.  As I said in the fantasy sports gambling thread before.  the money won is getting so large.  That eventually, someone is going to bribe someone to not have as good of a week.  Especially when a majority of the gamblers competition is betting on that someone.  In 1 week, a gambler can make $2 million+.  In 1 week, I don't believe there is any NFL player that makes that much.  In other words, what the commish says really has no impact in this case.

Bettman though did bring up the 2 million population, and the fantastic season ticket interest.  He also said that that area is hungry for a pro team.  And this was all without asking.  This was just brought up because the Vegas situation was brought up.  He also brought up Foley's name specifically and the new stadium being built.

I really think this is a slam dunk.  Quebec is what the NHL is probably having a problem with.

More paranoid BS about the dangers of this city from a sports commissioner. It isn't heavily regulated legal gambling that they should be concerned about.

Just stick a team in Tuscaloosa and dress them in crimson. The Bama fans will believe that they are the Tide and pack the place.

At least until the first loss, then they will want the coach fired.

Pretty much what I'd imagine.

They'd more likely go to a Hockey game if its a college team than a professional team even if the ticket prices were the same.

in all fairness, we've seen recently that a player can drop $75k in just three days near downtown.
