Angels lucky Mike Trout is even thinking about an extension

The team’s Opening Day lineup this year will likely have just one player besides Trout under 30 (outfielder Kole Calhoun)

What does that matter? Aybar and Kendrick are both exactly 30, and Chris Iannetta will be 31 (if Conger isn't starting that is) as well as David Freese. How old is Boston's lineup? How about the Yankees?

And it should be noted that the Angels haven’t exactly been generous with their young superstar so far. When the Angels had back-to-back picks, 26th and 27th overall, in the 2009 draft, they selected Trout second, even though he was their preferred player. The thinking was it’d improve their negotiating position a bit. That’s smart business, but Trout might not have appreciated it overly much.

The more damaging decision could have come last year, when the Angels renewed Trout for just $510,000. That’s what he was due according to their scale for non-arbitration eligible players, which was based on service time, not performance. They weren’t willing to make an exception even for the best thing that had ever happened to their franchise. Were they worried that J.B. Shuck would say, “you gave Trout $750,000, where’s my $600,000?”

Wow. This is an actual article written in 2014. He is probably getting actual money to write this shit.

it's like the writer has been reading this board and conglomerated a bunch of stuff that has been written here.

It's amazing how little credit people give Trout for being a reasonable guy who is yet to act like a superstar.  Why would a guy without a day in professional baseball be put off by getting drafted one slot lower than he could have?  Of course any team would have done this fairly minor strategic maneuver.  And why would the Halos set a precedent that players in their non-arb club controlled seasons should be paid relative to performance and not service time?  Trout is going to get paid.  He knows it.  The halos know it.  It's why a record deal is now being discussed.

I can't disagree that the halos aren't exactly set up to win beyond 2015.  Some good things will have to happen for that to be the case, but they are not totally unreasonable to consider.

With injuries and happenstance being what it is, I just can't imagine anyone turning down 150mil over the next 6-7 years.

The other thing that's important to note.  Although misguided at times, this franchise appears committed to winning.

On Pouliot's Twitter account he is posting the Red Sox are setting themselves up to sign Trout once his club control is up.

funny enough, there was that thread the other day filling in the Angels lineup with google search results.  Trout's was 'Mike Trout Red Sox'.  Boston fans really are the best, aren't they?

What a joke of an article.

Also, people seem to mistake the difference between an extension to a to be FA or someone on the last year of arb vs an extension to someone who hasn't even hit arb yet.

Trout will be extended at less than market value for the same reason Longoria did.  Huge signing bonus and he will still be in his prime when this contract ends.

Pujols got 250 million at age 31.  If Trout is a FA at around the same age you would have to think he will get the same if his production continues.  If it doesn't he already made 150-250 million dollars.  To be honest you would be pretty stupid not to do it.  So the Angels are lucky that Mike Trout isn't stupid.

Trout is pretty lucky that someone is willing to pay him 30+million to play a game!

I have said this a 100 times.  Its about leverage.  The Angels have leverage because Trout is under club control.  Trout has leverage because he is the best player in the game.  However, Trout is just one knee injury away from entering the workforce without a college degree.  The Angels are obligated to only give him 500K.  The big contract is in the Trout's best interest because it is an insurance against injury.  It is in the Angels best interest if they can get a discount on his free agency years.

Accurate if opinions are now facts and if people ignore the reality that the Angels drafted him second in part as a gag, to make the guy that scouted him go WTF?  His guessing at the Ange's motivation for renewing Trout's contract is also pretty funny.

Could the guy be any more clueless?

Absolutely this. And very well accepted from those in and around baseball as to what actually happened. Made zero difference in money.

Pouliot is awful so no surprise this was written by him

Matthew Pouliot ‏@matthewpouliot 23h

I think the Red Sox have had Trout in the back of their minds with how they've approached these last 2 offseasons.

lol

Oh man. This guy is stupid. Well that just proves this article was written out of butthurt and not actual reporting.
